New museum of art 20 minutes from railway station, Castillet tower and panorama tea room on top of Galleries Lafayette department store. 2 rugby stadiums and park of San Vicens with lovely lake and view of the Canigou mountain. Perpignan is a lively place, cleaner and neater than some other southern French cities. The historical sites are not particularly thrilling, but it's pleasant to wander around the old town and there is always something going on - the annual festival of photojournalism while we were there. The beach resorts of Canet and Sainte-Marie are within easy reach. Recommended excursions: Céret, Collioure (each a cheap 40-min bus ride away if you can figure out the eccentric timetable) + the Red Train along the Fenouillèdes valley west of Perpignan - with very knowledgeable guides! Like many visitors to the town, we were drawn to the town by the chance to watch the Catalans Dragons rugby league club play at Stade Gilbert Brutus. However, there is so much more that the town has to offer travellers. The town centre is crammed with beautiful architecture, quirky shops, bars and cafes and lots of history. Meanwhile, for just a euro you can catch a forty minute bus down to the coast (we chose Collioure). A brilliant trip whether visiting with family or friends. Historical castle with old town. Quiet provincial French town with an interesting looking medieval heart that is undergoing restoration. We walked around Perpignan, well signposted. The locals are friendly and helpful. We ate at a restaurant close to the train station the food was tasty and reasonably priced. The Pizza place close to town was a bit more expensive but food was tasty and staff helpful.
