Formerly a traditional farm of the Toulouse region dating from the end of the 19th century, the Closerie de l'Autan offers its guests two accommodations for a simple and warm family welcome. It is located in the village of Fenouillet north-west of Toulouse (10 km). The two accommodations are spacious and each have a private bathroom and toilet. The first consists in a double bedroom (Côté Jardin) with en-suite bathroom and dressing room. The second has two bedrooms — one double (Côté Levant) and one (Coté Pitchouns) with 4 beds in bunk bed arrangement, for children and teenagers) and a small living room; it is therefore ideal for hosting a family. With its structure of bricks and Garonne pebbles, and its wooden shutters, the building is well protected to face the local wind: l’Autan! It is set in a large wooded garden: depending on the season, violets, daffodils, irises, old roses, peonies, borage, mauves, etc., bring colorful touches to the green setting made of ornamental trees and fruit trees. A few hens and roosters, as well as a cat, all docile, are the other residents of this privileged place.

Sometimes accused of being a turbulent wind “which can make one crazy”, its climatic virtues “Marine breeze extending to West of the Toulouse area” are nevertheless very popular in the summer season!

Located between the banks of the Garonne river and those of the Lateral Canal to the Garonne, Fenouillet is just 10 km from Toulouse center and 7 km from Toulouse Blagnac airport. The Latin etymology of its name remains uncertain; it would come from: either Fenoletum (hay, forage) or Foeniculum (small hay), giving Occitan fenolh and French fenouil. With suffix -etum (then, -et), Fenolhet designates a place where fennel abounds. Three highlights mark its history: - The Celtic presence: Third century goldsmith parts discovered while digging the Canal Lateral in the middle of the 19th century — Fenouillet torques, now preserved at the Saint Raymond Museum in Toulouse. - the floods of the Garonne: notably the 1875 one, immortalized by the formula “Que d’eau, Que d’eau ! (so much water)” pronounced then in Toulouse by the President Mac Mahon; Émile Zola reported the flood in his novel “L’Inondation”; but, a careful reading reveals that he makes the river flow to countercurrent. - Inspiration for Henri Matisse: at the end of the 19th century, the artist painted several canvases there. Today, a hiking trail follows its footsteps in the “Ramiers” located in the meanders of the river.
