Property information

Byre Cottage, near Dulverton, is a spacious one-bedroom retreat for two, set within the beautiful Somerset countryside of Exmoor National Park. Perfect for couples or friends, it offers peace and privacy on a quiet no-through road, with an adjoining garden overlooking the Exmoor hills and Barle Valley. Inside, the cottage features a king-size zip-and-link bed (convertible to twins), a newly fitted en-suite shower room, and an open-plan living space with dining area, seating, and 50" Smart TV. The country-style kitchen is fully equipped, while the utility area provides a washer/drier, Belfast sink and WC. Excellent Wi-Fi keeps you connected. Outside, guests can enjoy a private unfenced garden with summer house, patio with table and chairs, plus access to a communal fenced garden. Bed linen, towels, toiletries, heating and electricity are all included. Up to three well-behaved dogs are welcome (for 20 GBP each). Arrival is from 4 pm, departure by 10 am. One allocated parking space is provided. The cottage makes an ideal base for exploring Exmoor’s landscapes and wildlife, home to red deer, hares and Exmoor ponies. The nearby market town of Dulverton (just over two miles away) offers excellent local produce, a bakery, butchers, independent shops, cafés, pubs and restaurants. From the doorstep, walk to the famous Tarr Steps, arrange horse riding on the open moor, or try paddleboarding at Wimbleball Lake. Sandy beaches on the North Devon coast are within easy reach. After sunset, Exmoor’s status as Europe’s first Dark Sky Reserve offers some of the clearest starry skies in the UK. Byre Cottage combines comfort and charm with endless opportunities to relax or explore—making every stay as restful or adventurous as you choose.

Neighbourhood information

The historic market town of Dulverton lies just over two miles from Byre Cottage. The journey follows the River Barle at the bottom of the lane, crossing the 18th-century Marsh Bridge, where the water tumbles over smooth stones shaped by centuries. Dulverton itself offers a wide choice of independent shops and amenities – and we highly recommend the fish and chips from the local chippy. This location is ideal for exploring Exmoor’s walks and landmarks. Nearby highlights include the ancient clapper bridge at Tarr Steps, the dramatic Devil’s Punch Bowl and the mysterious Caractacus Stone. Wimbleball Lake provides land and water-based activities such as paddleboarding, kayaking, sailing, fishing and a nine-mile lakeside walk, with mobility scooter hire available to make it accessible for all. History lovers will enjoy Dunster Castle and Watermill, with origins dating back to the 11th century, while the Exmoor Pony Centre – free to visit – is just a mile away. Venture further to discover the twin villages of Lynton and Lynmouth, only 12 miles away, and the Valley of Rocks, famous for its dramatic coastal scenery, striking geology and herd of wild goats. For breathtaking views, head to Dunkery Beacon, the highest point on Exmoor. The walk to the summit rewards visitors with sweeping vistas across Somerset, the North Devon coast, the Severn Estuary and even as far as Wales on a clear day.
