Damson Ghyll is a converted barn, originally built in the early 19th century. It is surrounded by open fells and woodland and has its own small beck, sometimes trickling and sometimes cascading, down to the nearby River Cocker. The guest bedroom is on the ground floor with very easy access from the garden and breakfast is served in an adjacent room on the ground floor. Breakfast includes prize-winning marmalade, home-made bread and local produce where possible. There are a number of local places for dinner, some within walking distance (notably the Kirkstile Inn, pre-booking strongly recommended) and others in Buttermere, Lorton and Cockermouth within a short car ride.
Damson Ghyll is situated at Latterhead, Loweswater in the beautiful Vale of Lorton which is in the secluded northwest part of the Lake District National Park and is an ideal base for walking, cycling and touring. The towns of Cockermouth (Wordsworth’s birthplace) and Keswick are nearby. Latterhead is a small hamlet enclosed by Low Fell on one side and by the higher mountains of Whiteside and Grasmoor on the other. There are 3 lakes within easy reach of Latterhead – Loweswater itself, Crummock Water with its backdrop of Mellbreak and Grasmoor; and Buttermere surrounded by its own set of fells – Red Pike, High Stile, High Crag, Haystacks, Fleetwith Pike, Hindscarth and Robinson. The Vale of Lorton can be easily accessed over any of several beautiful passes – Whinlatter, Newlands or Honister from Borrowdale or simply off the A66 from Cockermouth. For cyclists, the Coast to Coast (C2C) route passes the front gate.
