Up North Stays
Nestled in the tranquil countryside of North Northumberland, Millers Cottage and The Granary offer a serene escape midway between Berwick upon Tweed and Alnwick. Set within a beautifully restored Grade II listed building, these two individual properties blend modern comfort with historic charm, creating an ideal holiday retreat just a stone's throw from the National Park, Holy Island, and the stunning sandy beaches of North Northumberland. Millers Cottage, located on the ground floor, features a contemporary kitchen and dining area equipped with a range cooker, built-in dishwasher, and washing machine. The spacious lounge, adorned with the original range fireplace and hearth, provides a cosy atmosphere for relaxation, complete with a log-burning stove and a basket of wood provided for your stay. The bathroom boasts a large walk-in shower, heated towel rail, underfloor heating, and a heated mirror for added luxury. Millers Cottage accommodates up to five guests with two king-size bedrooms—one of which can be converted into twin beds. An additional pull-out bed for a child is also available upon prior arrangement. Outside, a small private garden invites you to unwind, featuring a sun-trap seating area and a raised deck for enjoying the picturesque countryside and local wildlife. On the upper floor, The Granary offers an expansive open-plan kitchen and living area, complete with modern appliances and an island dining space. The inviting living room, furnished with reclining sofas, is perfect for unwinding after a day of exploration. The bedroom features a super king bed, which can also be split into two singles, accommodating up to two guests. The bathroom is well-appointed with a bath and shower, toilet, sink, and heated towel rail. Step outside to enjoy the private balcony seating area, with access to the surrounding gardens, where you can fully embrace the beauty of this idyllic setting.
Millers Cottage and The Granary were once the home of the miller who operated the water-driven corn mill and tended the surrounding land at Holburn Mill Farmhouse. The farmhouse, built in 1894, is more financially successful, while the exact construction date of the cottage remains uncertain, though it has been inhabited for over 130 years. Historical census records indicate that at least eight people once lived in Millers Cottage, which has now been modernised for your comfort. The original range in the living room, which once provided cooking and heating, adds character to the cottage. Planning permission was granted in 2018, and extensive renovations began in 2019, transforming the space with essential utilities and modern amenities, including heating and bathrooms. We welcomed our first guests in June 2020 and are pleased to offer you a peaceful retreat. Enjoy the tranquillity and unique charm of our cottage during your stay.
