The village of Hayfield and surrounding area has an abundance of great traditional Inn's and Eateries including the Michelin listed and multi award winning gastro pub 'The Packhorse Inn', a short walk from the cottage in the centre of the village. This beautiful Peak District village was listed in the Doomsday Book, then called 'Hedfeld'. It was once a natural clearing in the vast forest at the foot of Kinder Scout, the highest point in the Peak District (2088ft). As such it is the perfect base for exploring the Dark Peak by foot or by MTB.
Hayfield shares its industrial past as a mill village with nearby Manchester, as does neighbouring New Mills. These two villages are connected by the Sett Valley Trail which is popular for walking and cycling, originally this was the route of the trainline used for the building of Kinder Reservoir. Kinder Reservoir, is located at the foot of the Kinder Plateau. There is a wonderful riverside trail from the village to the Reservoir and up into the surrounding hills.
What Hayfield is probably most famous for is the Mass Trespass, which was seen as one of the most successful acts of civil disobedience in British history in 1932. It was immortalised by Ewan MacColl's folk song 'The Manchester Rambler'.
You may remember Hayfield also as the filming location for the TV Drama 'The Village (2014)' and also the story of Tony Wilson and Factory Records in '24 Hour Party People (2002). A famous local actor was born in the village, Arthur Lowe (Captain Mainwaring of 'Dad's Army), and his home is marked by a blue plaque on Kinder Road.
There are several natural springs within Hayfield village, some of which once supplied part of the village's water. These are no longer in active use, although they are 'dressed' yearly in the dressing well dressing ceremonies.
