Our initial impression was very positive. Great decor and fittings. A very well-appointed cottage. The bed was very comfortable, and the kitchen well-stocked. The upstairs sitting room is very comfortable. Although the village has few amenities,...

The Weavers Cottage is the oldest still inhabited house in the area, a traditional stone built 'white house' which was totally derelict when we purchased it. We stripped the house back to the bare stone walls, dug up the floor and removed the roof - we jokingly said we bought four walls! Over a years worth of renovations later the house is transformed! Underfloor heating throughout and the highest spec insulation makes it cosy and warm. Brand new electrics, plumbing, decoration etc. combined with antique and upcycled furniture creates a luxurious country cottage feel. The kitchen has been crafted from an upcycled vintage sideboard and other pieces of antique furniture. The bespoke staircase is a triumph with the joiner built cupboard underneath for coats and shoes, a perfect hark-back to the original v-lining. The master bedroom is now downstairs, with a superb oak king-sized bed, cosy window nook and plenty of original artwork. Upstairs the previous bedroom is now a snug sitting room with an antique tiled fireplace and driftwood light feature. From the second twin bedroom you can spy the hills of Harris and the mainland! Attached to the main house but with separate entrances is a handy utility room with washing and drying facilities and a luxurious sauna room with shower and changing area. The house will be a cosy haven filled with our handwoven tweed, handcrafted ceramics, original art and interesting curios. I want it to feel like a welcoming place for you to unwind after a day exploring our beautiful isle! We are happy to accept well behaved dogs but do request you select the additional cleaning fee for their stay The Sauna is bookable for the additional one-off Sauna fee per stay
We are an independent weavers and craftspeople, my sisters weave our own handwoven tweeds to unique designs which I then sew into clothing, accessories, homeware and more. I also paint, make jewellery from seashore finds and mini ceramics. Our studio shop is five minutes drive or fifteen - twenty minutes walk from The Weavers Cottage. You can see our loom in action and find out about the weaving heritage on the Island plus browse our well stocked shop. I created much of the art and all of the textiles found in the Cottage; throws, curtains, cushions, lampshades and so much more! We decided to purchase the derelict house as a chance to rescue one of the oldest houses in the village and a chance to put our character on the place. To create something that really sang with our designs and showcased what we can do. When we aren't weaving or sewing we spend our free time enjoying our local area; the roads are quiet so even just a wander round the local roads is relaxing. I regularly see sea eagles, golden eagles, stags, seals, otters and sea birds just from the road! We also go off exploring the Island and making the most of the spectacular scenery, especially the beaches!
Walking There are plenty of lovely walks to do from the house, of various levels of difficulty. Simply wandering along the roads gives stunning scenery and you can do walks of any length you fancy. Or you can head off round the various shorelines pretty much anywhere in North Lochs for more adventurous hiking and the possibility of seeing some amazing wildlife. There are unlimited numbers of walks to do around the island for all levels and abilities. From gentle beach strolls or road explorations to full blow hikes across the mountains. And for those who love horses you can even go riding on a beach with Traigh Mhor Pony Trekking! Wildlife We have an abundance of wildlife right on our doorstep here in North Lochs - literally in the case of this stag that I photographed directly across the road from the Cottage! Sea and Golden Eagles regularly fly up the lochs and overhead so keep an eye to the skies. Very occasionally we actually see an otter on the shore though we know they are there all the time from the crab and sea urchin shells as well as their latrines! Seals and dolphins are occasionally seen in the bay and there are plenty of wading and diving shore birds The Beaches No matter the weather I would always recommend you visit at least one beach while you're here! We have some of the best beaches in the world, although not always the weather to go with it, they are spectacular whether is glorious sunshine or blowing a hoolie! My personal favorites are Reef and Garry beach on Lewis. Other gorgeous beaches are Bosta, Ardroil, Shawbost, Dalbeg, Dalmore and Traigh Mhor to name but a few! Stornoway The main town of Stornoway is only 20 minutes from the house with multiple supermarkets, gift shops, pharmacies, boutiques, cafes, restaurants, pubs and general stores it contains everything you could possibly need. Lews castle and grounds on the outskirts of stornoway is another great visiting point Callanish Stones is only 20 minutes away, plus so so much more!
