Vulcan Lodge was once a beautiful old country inn. Sadly it fell on hard times and closed. We therefore set about converting it into 5 lovely holiday cottages. Its uniqueness is that though all the cottages are in the same building they are all self-contained with their own private entrance and furnished to the same high standard. The largest cottage will however accommodate all of the cottages guests for dining and socialising which makes it ideal for group bookings. The river Wye is on the doorstep (at the rear of the Lodge) and is accessed through a gate, stile and short walk through a wood. Just the other side of the river is the Wye Valley Walk and the Sustrans routes 8 and 3 are on the doorstep. It has the advantage of having a large convenience store and Gregg's cafe nearby. Why cook breakfast with this next door! Two of our cottages (the Tudor and the Middleton) are equipped for guests with disabilities and have a wet room and a range of mobility aids. Vulcan Lodge is just 3 miles from the lively market town of Rhayader with its memorial town clock a feature of the crossroads. You can't get lost in Rhayader as the four main streets are called North, South, East and West Street! Rhayader has its own museum, exhibition and performance centre known as CARAD (Community Arts Rhayader & District). As well as a rolling programme of exhibitions they have regular gigs in their performance space. CARAD also serves as a tourist information centre. There is a town guide and map which gives information about walks in and around the town. In North Street you will find the busy Smithfield Livestock market. Rhayader is very fortunate to have a large free car park by kind permission of the Smithfield Trust. Opposite the Smithfield is Rhayader Leisure Centre which has a fine swimming pool, gymn and squash court. Follow the signposts to the Waen Capel Park. This is a just a short walk from the centre of the town and is beautifully located on the banks of the river. A short walk along West Street will take you over the bridge into Cwmdauddwr where the start of the Elan Valley Path can be found. This wonderful hard core path will t
