Niochori was one among the first neighborhoods built outside of the old town of Rhodes by Greek inhabitants, who fled the safety of the formidable city walls after the Turkish occupation of the island in the 16th century. Built at the "tip" of the island, Niochori (new town in Greek), one of the fanciest neighborhoods at the time, since it quickly incorporated houses of diplomats, the embassies and even the first hotels on the island around the Catholic church of Santa Maria. Even today, it has maintained its fancy and cosmopolitan vibe.
