The name Villa Wastra comes from the word "wastra" (Sanscrit) which means cloth, a material culture which has become one of my hobbies (will tell you more in the part 'about me'). Our property stands on a cliff with a view over the valley and the forest. A creek flows through the valley, can't see but on a quiet night you can hear the water flowing. The house was actually build for our three kids, who all live in North America, for them to come home to visit family. Now with families of their own and having quite a busy life, they seldom come to Bali. With 5 empty rooms they suggested to start a Bed and Breakfast. The suites are set up as you would have liked it in your own home.

My husband and I are both retired from the University of Indonesia, however after his retirement Bob was reinstalled as full professor at the same University and taught until he passed away in October 2016 at the age of 75. Our three children, Wishnu lives in Toronto with his wife and 4 children; Rama who works in the financial sector in Manhattan NY and lives in Forest Hills, Queens with his wife and two sons; and our daughter Cempaka who works as a statistician at Intermountain Hospitals and as a professor at the University of Utah. I love to meet people from all walks of life who visit our Bed and Breakfast. My interests also include the collection and preservation of traditional textiles specifically from southeast Asia. Every two years this gives me the opportunity to meet other textile enthusiasts from all over the world during a symposium held bi-annually in a different Southeast Asian country. Although the humid weather in the mountains of Bali might deteriorate and are not quite appropriate for traditional textiles, we choose to name our house Villa Wastra.

Villa Wastra is located 40 minutes north of Ubud in the mountains of Kintamani. The location is quite remote, but provides a calm and quiet environment. We don't have malls, restaurants or shops in our village, and the best thing it can offer are hikes and half-hour to two-hour walks around the property. The villa faces another hill and a small village called Pilan. Until 20 years ago Pilan was cut off from the rest of the world, but since 1995, a suspension bridge was build between the hills, which made access to the main road possible. Near Pilan for many years grew a banyan tree, a sacred tree for the Balinese, which was big because of the hanging roots, each time sprouting a new tree. However, since last year, regrettably the tree became victim to lightning during a storm, and now only the remains are left. For the keen hiker, we provide maps in the suites, to guide you through the trails. Other activities include hiking Mount Batur which is about 14 km from Villa Wastra; Elephant Park, half hour from our Villa, White Water rafting in Kedewatan (30 minutes) from Villa Wastra, Bird Park (45 Minutes). The beach is about 2 hours away either to Sanur, Padang Bay, Seminyak or Kuta.
