The Herons Rest is uniquely located by the waterside within a stone’s throw from the city centre action, we call it keeping it country in the city. Turning right out the front door takes you to the Spanish arch, the historical city walls and across the fish market plaza to the pubs and restaurants of the Latin Quarter. The view from your room overlooks the Claddagh quay where the river Corrib meets Galway Bay. It is a tidal harbour with an incredible rise and fall of 15 feet. This sheltered harbour is home to the traditional black boat with rust coloured sails known as the Galway hooker. Alongside the pleasure boats Lobster and crab fishermen can frequently be seen landing their catch. The Mutton Island lighthouse is situated at the mouth of the harbour and the blue limestone hills of the Burren lie on the opposite shore, making it a very safe harbour for sailing. On our doorstep Corrib river is the shortest an fastest moving river in Europe and its bank is teaming with wildlife and home to one of the largest colonies of mute swans in Western Europe. Occasionally from your window you may be entertained watching wading fishermen seeking elusive salmon.
