A beautiful old building with wonderful quirks. Transfer from car park to the property was welcome and the return in a tuk tuk was fun.

The room was a wonderfully themed medieval room complete with a suit of armour and vaulted ceiling, it was set slightly away, a hundred yards or so from the main hotel, and smelled very clean, with quality linen and towels. we had our own front...

Property information

Palazzo Gallo, also called the ancient Assanti-Aragona palace of Gallipoli, dates back to the year 1486. In 2012 it was masterfully renovated, trying however to leave its history and furnishings intact. Located near the court of the same name, Palazzo Gallo has always represented an important reference point for the citizens of Gallipoli but not only. The owners of the Palazzo who have followed one another over the years, from the Assanti to the Aragona, from the De Tommasi up to Vincenzo Gallo, owner since the mid-1800s, have distinguished themselves as illustrious men but above all as patrons, that is, in support of artistic activities. Proof of this are the traces and documented presence inside the palace of Jusepe de Ribera, also known by the pseudonym Spagnoletto (1591), a Spanish painter, active mainly in Naples who lived in the palace in the current suite dedicated to him (Suite le terraces). The Palazzo has very ancient origins (1486) even if it has undergone considerable transformations over the years. Traces of the first settlements are still visible in the Aragonese suite, where the original walls have been the subject of a careful and accurate restoration, giving new luster to the old masonry through a skilful use of lights and crystal walls. Each suite, as well as the whole building, is strongly characterized by the presence of references to Lecce stone, to the culture and to the Salento Baroque style, with unique furniture and details of the time. Finally, on the lower floor of the structure there is an ancient oil mill which makes the history of the building even more fascinating.

Neighbourhood information

Palazzo Gallo is located a stone's throw from the famous Corte Gallo. Despite the liveliness of the historic village of Gallipoli, in the close vicinity of the Palazzo there are no restaurants or clubs which makes the area quiet and not noisy. Most of the houses close to the Palazzo are inhabited by residents, which makes the place authentic and rich in tradition. Finally, the strategic position of the Palazzo connects it easily both to the services and premises of the historical centre, both to the old bridge which connects the old city to the new one, and to the beautiful free beach of Purità (the oldest Gallipolina beach, less than 5 minutes walk from the Palace).
