Gjerde Camping was built in 1973. I took over the campsite from my parents in 2006 and changed its name to Jostedal Camping. The camp is situated by a glacial river in a quiet and idyllic location just a few kilometers from Jostedalsbreen- and Breheimen National Parks (as the crow flies), on either side of the Jostedal valley. Dal is the Norwegian word for valley and bre means glacier. Jostedal Camping lies within easy reach of all glacier activities in Jostedalen, including guided glacier hikes at Nigardsbreen. Our municipality (Luster) is a unique hiking and skiing area, whether you choose to hire a guide or not. By the entrance to the campground there are several boards with information about the most popular trails in the area, most of them familiar to Astrid. Please feel free to ask for advise. During summer Icetroll offer rafting from the campsite.
I am a dedicated outdoor person who is very fond of Jostedalen (dal = valley) and I love to go hiking and skiing in the mountains here. Due to the proximity of the many glaciers (bre = glacier) around Jostedalen, the snow is often deep and powdery during winter, which I utilize as often as I can. In Jostedalen you can choose between the many marked trails in the area, or go backcountry hiking or skiing, often being completely on your own in the wilderness. In my younger days, I used to travel a lot. At the campsite I often meet like-minded people, being able to share nice memories and experiences, which I cherish.
Jostedal Camping is situated by a glacial river at Gjerde in Jostedalen, only a stone's throw away from Nigardsbreen and Jostedalsbreen- and Breheimen National Parks (dal = valley, bre = glacier). The campsite is an excellent base for skiing and hiking, guided glacier walks at Nigardsbreen and combined glacier and kayaking trips at Styggevatnet. Rafting directly from the campsite during summer. 2,5 km to Breheimsenteret National Park Center and Museum. 150 m to the local Joker grocery with a small gas station and more or less the same distance to the cafeteria at Jostedal Hotel.
