Praia da Rocha is a beach in the municipality of Portimão, in the Algarve (Portugal). This beach has a large stretch of sand, with a total area of around 146,000 m2, along 1.5 kilometres of coastline. Next to the beach stands the Santa Catarina Fortress, built in the 17th century to ensure the defence of the Arade river bar. The beach owes its name to the rocks that lie between the sand and the sea. It is one of the most famous in the Algarve, if not the whole country. Every year during the summer, the beach fills up with holidaymakers from all over the world and, despite its long length, it's rare that it doesn't get crowded. In recent years, it has hosted the Beach Soccer World Cup, which is played in a purpose-built stadium with a capacity for 3,000 people. Next to the beach, there are a number of restaurants and bars that attract a large number of tourists, both during the day and at night.
