New and well-kept hotel with spacious Japanese rooms with a large window and relaxing view. Hotel very clean both in the rooms and in the shared bathrooms. The internal onsen is small, but comfortable and well-kept, fantastic for relaxing. Both breakfast and dinner are very good and served with care, the quality of the food is excellent. The owners are very kind, very helpful and ready to solve any problem. The hotel is quiet and located very close to both the town center and the bus stop. It is a great place to stay, highly recommended for resting especially for those who, like me, were walking the Kumano Kodo path.

The hotel is a great base to explore Kumano Kodo. Location is excellent - at the heart of Kumano Kodo, near Hongu, right on the main bus line, great for hikes. The hotel has very nice Japanese style family rooms, with great views of nature. Dinner (kaiseki - tasting style) was fantastic and very good value for money. Breakfast also rich (you can choose Japanese and western). Bonus - the hotel also has own "onsen" - Japanese hot bath, including two private family rooms and two big open air bath. Using the onsen is included in the room price. Moreover, staff is very helpful, speak solid English and will take you to with a shuttle to a better bust stop for the ride to the Kumano Kodo trek.

Located in Tanabe, 12 km from Hosshinmon Oji Shrine, Minshuku Sumiya offers accommodation with a public bath.

Stunning location right next to the onsen and river. Delicious food. Owner Kohei was really friendly, helpful and welcoming. He speaks English which is not a given so that was extremely appreciated - the other guests while we were there were all Japanese. We'd love to come again!
