This was the best value for money stay I had this trip. Highly recommend opting for dinner to be included with your stay. The steamed vegetables and meat with rice and soup was a sumptuous, healthy yet delicious meal especially at the end of a day's big hike. The dorm beds were comfortable, and it was a really nice luxury to get a private onsen experience (especially the outdoor one). Though there was no convenience store around, the hostel has a very good range of snacks, instant noodles, buns at good prices so you don't have to worry about not having food around.

Guesthouse Okagesan is a lovely traditional house converted into a traveler's inn located in Watase, an onsen town deep in Wakayama's Kumano Kodo region. Watarase Onsen, the largest in western Japan, is about a 15-minute walk from the guesthouse. I was pleasantly surprised how well-supplied this accommodation is, and even small traditional Japanese snacks were provided. There were also discount vouchers for visits to the Watarase Onsen (be aware that vouchers are only usable from 8am onwards). Overall, I love how cozy and comfortable I felt during my stay. The best part was the superb hospitality of its owner, Manabu-san. He is very helpful, friendly and has a great sense of humor! His playful and creative personality is reflected in the guesthouse. Make sure to check his yakitori place which serves delicious local specialties! What I appreciate the most is the delicious and filling onigiri breakfast he prepared before I left! It even came with a hand-written note of gratitude. As a foreign resident of Japan who has traveled quite extensively around the country, Wakayama is a lovely out-of-the-radar destination and my visit was made memorable and extra special by Guesthouse Okagesan.

A very lovely house inside a small village, not too far from the stamp location. The house is clean and cozy with a very beautiful view. The owner is also very friendly and helpful, a very good stop during the Kumano Kodo trip.

This hostel is perfectly located a few steps from the entrance to the Kumano Hongu Taisha Shrine for those walking the Kumano Kodo. The bus stop is also just across the road making it easy to explore and experience the local area and onsen. The owners also run a fantastic cafe across the road and provided food for breakfast on check-in. Our traditional private room was very comfortable and the common areas and facilities were comfortable, homely and clean. We would definitely stay again.

They showed care and thoughtfulness by looking for us when we checked in 2 hours late and offered us cup noodles for dinner. The next day we were late for bus going to Hosshinmon-oji and the owner was so nice driving us to Kumano Hongu Taisha catching the bus, and showed us the points of interest on the way. He is considerate, compassionate, kind and does extra miles caring about his guests. The business runs only 1 month, it is fresh and clean. Greatly recommend staying in this new establishment!!

Location is perfect, you are couple of minutes away from the Kumano Hongu Taisha, the bus station and information center. The common areas are really spacious, so even if the accommodation is full it won't feel crowded. Free snacks, and you get also some bread, PB and J, and a banana for breakfast!

Breakfast was Sufficient with good choices of beverages. Good vibes and connected with many travelers. Just 3-4 min walk from bus station, Kumano Hongu Taisha, Tourist Info Center, about 5 min to eateries, grocery store, bakery. Owner is professional hiker (Kumano Experience) and was happy to share info.

Nice hostel in a beautiful green region. Very close to Kumano Hongu Taisha. The communal area is very cosy, homely and they offer a huge selection of cookies and sweets for free. Also free coffee, thee, cornflakes available. We enjoyed our stay here a lot
