We are experienced travellers and our stay in the cottage was by far one of our favourite things we’ve ever done. We decided to book it for 2 nights at the end of our Kumano Kodo walk, and we’re so glad we did. We spent our entire time there without leaving the cottage, it was so beautiful.
First of all, the cottage: This is a beautifully constructed cabin, with an incredible view and was very comfortable. A dream setting. We had the place to ourselves, even though the photos on the Booking website made it seem like we’d have the owners living next door or something, but that wasn’t the case. We had all the necessary appliances to make food, and the rice cooker was fantastic. We cooked rice there that Katsuro grows himself. The movement of the sun, shadows, haze and clouds throughout the day, made for an incredible natural show that never got boring. The starry nights were beautiful, supplemented with the flash of light from a distant lighthouse. The whole experience even led to us getting engaged on the balcony!
The host: A truly exceptional human being. The Japanese are known for being welcoming and friendly, and Katsuro (Ura) is the embodiment of all those great things that you hear about Japanese hospitality. He is warm, friendly, interesting, talented, and is genuinely interested in learning about his guests. He’s a former fireman, who now works in the fields as a farmer. We had several conversations with Ura and wish we could have had many more. Ura gave us delicious blueberry jam, some very nice persimmons, and the rice from his fields was lovely. In addition to all of that, Ura picked us up from Nachi Falls at the end of our long walk, took us to the supermarket, and made all the logistical elements of getting to the property so easy for us. Finally, on our last morning there, we were taken to the shrines where Ura used to go as a child and it was such an honour. What an amazing person Ura is. We feel very lucky that he shared his paradise with us. ありがとう。

This lodge provides free private parking, a shared kitchen and free WiFi. It is an old style house, so as long as you aren't expecting Western/modern comforts, it's fantastic! My daughter called it the Totoro house. You will sleep on Japanese futons that you lay out on the tatami mats - if you've never slept on a futon it might feel uncomfortable/hard compared to Western beds. You will eat sitting on the tatami mats, but there are a couple of small Western chairs if sitting on the floor is difficut. The bathroom is Japanese style with the toilet in one section, the sink/vanity in a second section and the shower with separate furo (deep bathtub for soaking after washing in the shower) in the third section. It was not the most modern but all clean and more spacious than the Western hotel bathrooms we had other parts of Japan! There is a TV, wifi worked great and a bluetooth speaker to play music. There aren't a lot of "tourist" attractions nearby but it you want serenity this hits the spot - a few steps away has you walking among farming fields and the house is also close to the forest with a little stream running along side the road making for a peaceful but easy walk up the mountain. The gohan (rice) cooked in the old style stove was the best we ate our entire trip! Wish we had bought some of the local rice. It can get a little smoky when dinner is being cooked but my mild asthma was fine. The host, Hiro, is amazing, super accomodating and friendly, he introduced us to his shiba inu (dog) and his duck, and even though we didn't ask ahead, he prepped for us to make tofu - this experience was an extra fee but totally worth it! During the winter you can also request mochitsuki (pounding rice into mochi) and summer/fall you can make noodles (can't remember if he said soba, ramen or udon). Hiro's English is limited, but he's so engaging, we asked him to eat dinner with us and my daughter loved that...he has such good energy!
Hashimoto

The staff came to pick us up at Hashimoto station mid-afternonn because it's really remote from anything and they dropped us at Koyasan the next day. We should have stayed for 2 nights instead of 1 because there is a lot to see in Koya san.
The staff was extremely helpful and patient with us. They really took good care of us.
The food was amazing ! They even adjusted to my seafood allergy.
Thank you for your warm welcome !

Shounsai appartement provides bicycles. We enjoyed cycling in Kyoto very much along the narrow streets. We only took public transport to go to the train station. The communication with the lodger was excellent and smooth. Very nice neighbourhood.
Great to experience ttraditional japanese lodgings and baths. Thank you for giving is information on the lion festival.
The house is very clean! Looks exactly same like the photos. The balcony is my favorite. My little sister and I fell in love with this Japanese-style lodge immediately. It’s very cozy!!! My little sister’s dream house now is this one!
I liked pretty much everything, the owners put so much love into everything! It looks like a cozy lodge and there’s some free drinks available and baked goods for 100¥. Also met great people there.
Unique experience , wonderful food and comfortable lodgings
It does what it says on the tin. Clean, comfortable, convenient. Laundry room and kitchen available. Stayed in a private room. Simple bathroom but good shower and nice shampoo, conditioner, shower gel (I actually didn't find anywhere in Japan where I had to use my own!). Excellent value for money: much nicer than Travelodge etc and much cheaper.
I was mostly outside exploring during the day and was there at the lodge only during the night to sleep. It was cozy and i had a good sleep. For a solo traveller, they had all the necessary amenities and i felt good while i was there. I even arrived late to check-in but they sent me the procedure on how to self check-in. Definitely recommended for solo travellers.
Saizenin is a beautiful temple situted slightly away from the main road. The staff was warm and welcoming and the room was big and comfortable. The food being shojin-ryori, was very different. Overall it was a truly unique experience to stay in a temple lodging.
Lovely ryokan styled lodging, choice of public or private baths, great breakfasts
