Featuring 4-star accommodation, Shelter Garden Nikko is located in Nikko, 2.1 km from Nikko Toshogu Shrine and 3.4 km from Tobu Nikko Station. There is an on-site restaurant, plus free private parking and free WiFi are available. The accommodation provides a lift and room service for guests. I selected this place because I read other reviews about the eclectic unique nature of the hotel and atmosphere. I wasn’t disappointed, in fact it exceeded my expectations in every way. The moment you arrive and are greeted warmly by the staff and handed a free drink of your choice, sets the tone for a wonderful experience ahead. The room was huge, warm, comfortable and very special in its minute details of architecture. We chose a river view room and I would highly recommend doing so as the massive picture window overlooks the forest and mountains and is simply breathtaking in the morning sunrise. This hotel was designed with careful thought given to every detail in its creation, with the mindset of creating a restful respite from the modern busy world we live in today. It has achieved this goal in my opinion and then some. We had the honour and pleasure of meeting the architect the second day we stayed and had a conversation with him about his wonderful hotel, he is such a joy to speak with. The food was also an absolute delight, huge filling and varied items at breakfast, and sumptuous selections and pairings at dinner. The staff are The best of anywhere we have stayed so far in Japan, and are gracious and smiling all the time. We speak very limited Japanese but this was never a problem so don’t worry about this as a barrier for coming here. We wouldn’t hesitate to come back and I was sorry I had to leave. This hotel, and Nikko is such a special beautiful place everyone should see it once if they can. Thank you shelter garden and staff for allowing me to have such a warm, restful and wonderful stay at your gorgeous hotel, and thank you so much for all your warmth and hospitality.

Set in Nakagawa and only 10 km from Nakagawa Aquatic Park, Iizukatei offers accommodation with garden views, free WiFi and free private parking. It is located 18 km from Ungan-ji Temple and provides full-day security. This 5-star ryokan offers private entrance. We were guests at the Iizukatei Hotel for three nights – a wonderful stay! We spent the first two nights in one of the renovated “Kura”. The small house – a traditionally renovated warehouse – had everything you need to feel comfortable! We could easily prepare our breakfast in the small kitchen. The bathroom and sleeping arrangements were perfect. We were particularly impressed by the fruit and vegetable platter that awaited us every day in our accommodation. The fridge was also always stocked with fresh drinks. On the third day, we moved to one of the hotel's more luxurious apartment. From there, we had a great view of the garden in several directions. The space was generously proportioned and nothing was missing. The hotel is located in a very quiet area in Nakagawa-machi, very close to the Bato Hiroshige Museum of Art, which was designed by Kengo Kuma. Nikkō is also easily accessible from here. For art lovers, we also recommend a visit to the MOB (Museum of Alternative Art), which is located not far from the hotel. Trips are also worthwhile to Nasu to the “Water Garden” by Junya Ishigami and to the sauna project “Genkiro” by artist Takashi Kuribayashi. An important addendum: On the last evening, we were allowed to use the brand new, not yet opened hotel sauna of the Iizukatei Hotel. It is – like the entire hotel complex – comfortable and inviting! It is a wonderful place to relax in the evening. Our special thanks go to “Mama Kei” for her warmth and attention, which made our stay a real gem.”

The accommodation offers a hot spring bath, free WiFi throughout the property and family rooms. Fantastic experience I believe we were the only westerners there during our 2 night stay The service from the staff was the best we have ever experienced Everyone from the porter, front desk, kitchen and wait staff were fantastic The level of English was quite basic but this did not hinder our enjoyment at all The onsens really are as big and beautiful as the pictures suggest Westerners should not be afraid of the experience, they have a helpful guide on their website. Please be aware that guests with tattoos are not allowed in the public onsens (this applies for the majority of onsens but some places do cater for tattooed guests) The full Ryokan meal service was incredible So many flavours with the highest quality seasonal ingredients, all presented beautifully on incredible crockery We stayed in a Japanese style room in the east building which allowed us to enjoy a private room experience. Please check with the hotel if they will be able to accommodate this for you, it is worth it in my opinion A special thank you to the kitchen staff who were so delightful We had a travel mishap and phoned ahead to let them know we would be 30 minutes late (we were already booked on the last available time slot). They were very kind in accommodating us and did not rush us through our meal Excellent value for money, we were so satisfied with the experience Fantastic stay, we were sad to leave and we would love to return on our next trip to Japan

Dinner was allocated at a private room which was nice n quiet. The lady manager came to say thank you in Japanese which we had difficulty to understand but it was a very warm gesture and made us feel happy. Booking.com should always offer plan with dinner n breakfast for onsen hotel in Japan. Having Japanese kaiseki dinner set at Nanae was an unforgettable experience. Arigato Nanae and specially to Sato san who help us to carry our luggage from a distance away at hotel entrance.
