Zhulat is a small mountain village that offers a truly authentic Albanian experience — you’ll likely be the only tourists or foreigners there. It’s hard to put into words what we experienced in the home of Fatmir and Fjona. If you’re seeking the real Albania, far from tourist resorts, this is the place for you. Here, you’ll encounter true Albanian hospitality. The house has belonged to Fatmir’s family for generations — their son is the 10th generation to live here. It’s a traditional stone house with a beautiful garden, full of history and decorated in authentic Albanian style. Each morning, Fjona prepares a rich and delicious breakfast made from local and homegrown ingredients. The garden is simply stunning — and much of what you eat comes directly from it. We were invited to a traditional Albanian dinner prepared by Fjona — homemade and full of local flavors. The next day, they even welcomed us for a delicious lunch. Staying here wasn’t just about accommodation — it was about connection, and a deep experience of real Albanian life. The place is calm and quiet, surrounded by mountains, with a refreshing river nearby. Gjirokastër is only about 30 minutes away. Fatmir and Fjona are warm, welcoming, and truly kind hosts. When we return to Albania, we will definitely come back to this place.

Such a nice place, with beautiful views from the mountain. The sky at night was also amazing. Elton and his father were so kind and prestatives. Always aware if we were confortable and providing something if needed. One of the highlights of the trip, for sure! We played football, did a barbacue, learned from local culture. And also there is a cinema in the camping. Definitely, I will come back on my next trip to Albania.

Before describing the property itself, I must mention the hotel manager—interestingly named Maradona. He was incredibly friendly and genuinely cared about our stay. After we made the reservation, he contacted us right away to share useful information about how to reach the hotel. He also gave us great tips about the city, which really added value to our trip. Although the hotel is within walking distance to the city center, Maradona kindly drove us there himself and picked us up at the time we requested. Since some members of my family are older and could have gotten tired walking, this gesture was deeply appreciated. The rooms were very well-maintained with a nostalgic charm, and the breakfast was satisfying. Overall, it was a warm and memorable experience thanks to both the hospitality and the comfort.

Great mixture of the atmosphere of a traditional house and brand new modern hotels. Next to museums and a few mins walk from the castle and old bazaar. Nice and quiet garden. Very welcoming and helpful staff, delicious and plentyful breakfast. The cool air of the old house and the comfy bed made my night sleep perfect. I wish I could have stayed longer.

Hotel Gjirokastër is located 300 metres from the centre, in a part of town famous for numerous museums.

the Hotel Gjirokaster is in the perfect location to the bazaar area, restaurants and close to the historic castle. the staff were amazing and very helpful. our room was lovely and had a view facing the bazaar area. there is a nice clean pool and lounging area. It was a much needed rest day for us.

We stayed as a group of eight people, had four rooms, and each one of them was different – this truly charmed us all. Every detail, such as a toilet hidden behind a closet door, pillows decorated with lace, paintings with lace displayed under glass, the view from the windows, the very large and cozy beds – everything was so thoughtful and homely, making you feel at home while being right in the heart of the town. Breakfast was served in a nearby café – plentiful and delicious – and the service was very pleasant. For those who ordered tea, each received an entire jug! Parking was nearby as well. It was an unforgettable, fantastic experience – during our 12-day stay in Albania, this was the best choice we could have made.
