We stayed two separate nights before and after doing the valbone to Theth hike and both rooms were really beautiful and very comfortable. The staff were super helpful and friendly, answering all our questions about buses etc and packing us breakfast for both mornings as we had to leave early. We left our suitcases in lockers here while doing the hike which was perfect. The cafe area downstairs is also a really lovely place to sit and enjoy the surroundings. The hotel is right in the middle of town and very close to the bus stop so it's very convenient.

Very cleaned properties in the heart of the city, everything was very close by, when we arrived we were welcomed by one friendly lady who gave a quick tour of the neighborhood and made some recommendations based on our likings. I always look the the reviews when looking at where to stay, and am never exactly sure what to think about a newish hotel that has a really high rating. But The Roots more than lived up the rating that they have. I loved everything about my stay. Originally I booked for 2 nights, but enjoyed Shkoder so much that I extended for another night, and didn’t think twice about staying put at The Roots. When first dropped off in the street were the hotel is located it felt a bit quite and out of the way, but I soon discovered that it is only a 3 minute stroll to the pedonale which actually makes it super central and yet away from noise and traffic. The room was excellent. All of the hotel was located on the 1 floor. As the hotel is quite recent, all of the fixtures and furniture were fresh and clean. The room was quite spacious with more than enough room to move around the bed and baggage with ease. The bed was delightfully comfortable; the perfect mix of support with softness. There was a small terrace/ balcony off each room which I didn’t utilize as it was quite cold, but can imagine it would be a nice place to sit in warmer weather and enjoy a quiet drink. The staff were super helpful; Badr was very friendly and gave excellent advice and help in getting me on a day trip to Koman Lake and Shala River (tip- if you go to either of these places and it is cool in Shkoder, it will be really cold on the river- bring warm clothes for the boat!), as well as helping with taxis, local knowledge and plans for further travel. I loved Shkoder and I hope to return someday. And if I do it will be a no-brainer that I will book a room at The Roots.

The stay was very pleasant. What we liked the most was the cleanliness and hospitality. Everything was tidy, clean, and the staff was extremely polite. The owners were always there ready for any need or suggestion we had. They made you feel at home. The hotel conditions were very good, the environment quiet and suitable for a peaceful rest. And although breakfast was not included in the price, it was prepared with care and according to our wishes. Truly a place that I would recommend to spend your holidays.

This time I saw Shkodra with different eyes.

This time I saw Shkodra with different eyes. The city’s diversity of people and cultural mix stood out strongly, and over the weekend the lively atmosphere of parties gave it an energetic spirit. What touched me most, however, were the Catholic churches scattered around the city. Stepping into them gave me a profound sense of spirituality and peace, balancing the vibrant social scene outside. Shkodra truly holds a unique charm – a place where culture, celebration, and spirituality come together beautifully.

Five star service.

Five star service. The staff really makes you feel like family and goes above and beyond. The animals all contribute to the farm and are so well taken care of. They’re all a part of the experience. The rooms are impeccably clean and traditional with modern upgrades (best plumbing, great AC, hotel toiletries, great shower etc), clean, crisp white sheets. All of the things you’d expect in a five star hotel, except this feels more like your own home. Gzim and his wife are wonderful and provide help whenever you need advice for local restaurants or a ride nearby. Mrizi is literally 3-4 min max by foot. I preferred staying at Vitoria over Mrizi, and would return again. My son loved it! And Breakfast was wonderful!!

Out of season there is really nothing to do in the city and...

Out of season there is really nothing to do in the city and we cam in the beginning of October. 95% of shops and restaurants are closed and kids have nothing to do int he are of the town. I believe that in the season this place is very lively, but we have not experienced that ourselves.

It was the first time to be in Velipoje.

It was the first time to be in Velipoje. It's not a big city but I am positively surprised. The Velipoja beach (where we were placed) was clean, the water was so clear and warm. The kids part with the toys at the center of the city was excellent. The food was good tasted, fresh and the staff was very polite.

Reviews we read of Shkoder said it's a university town with lots of biking. Not sure what those reviewers were writing about, but there weren't many bike friendly areas and the town was not as vibrant as we expected. We did spend some time in the Shiroka area on the lake a 10 minute or so drive from Shkoder and that was very nice - good restaurants and lake activities. We also went to the mountains and stayed in Theth, which was wonderful and highly recommended.

The hotel is close to the beach, which was great.

The hotel is close to the beach, which was great. The pool was small but clean, and my son really enjoyed it. Breakfast was OK, and there are small shops nearby, along with parking available. I would have rated this 5 stars if it weren't for one issue: the cooking utensils. If you plan to book an apartment, I recommend bringing your own cooking pans, or you’ll be disappointed.
