It’s lovely and peaceful. There is a gate to the hotel which makes it feel really secure. The owner was leaving for the day and offered us a ride into town as we were going to order a taxi. Very helpful and friendly staff. The bed was incredibly comfortable!!!

Main thing was how friendly and welcoming the hosts were! Breakfast and the room were great but that is what really made it for us. They gave great recommendations of what to do in town and in the surrounding area. One of the highlights of our trip so far.

Everyone that I met during my stay were very friendly and supportive. I have very little spoken Spanish but it didn’t make any difference to the staff and it’s owner. In fact, the owner’s English was very good and it really made my stay in Coyhaique very memorable.

Coihaique is a town of about 60k, so not small, but quaint and not touristy at all. Plenty of good local eateries, grocery stores and whatever else you may need. Lovely rolling hills and the Andes mountains in the distance. Interesting geography and history of the area. We only stayed one night but wish we would've stayed a bit longer to see more.

There are very few excursions available in Puerto Rio...

There are very few excursions available in Puerto Rio Tranquilo - especially with the closure of the Exploradores Glacier. I would recommend to stay in Puerto Guadal instead which is 1 hour away. Easier to cover the area around (Chile Chico, Cochrane, Patagonia National Park) and even to come to Rio Tranquilo as needed (which is 1 hour drive away).

We strongly recommend Chile Chico and the very scenic road between Chile Chico and Puerto Guadal. The road is a bit dangerous, but the scenery is breathtaking. The General Carrera Lake is huge and has scenery with snow capped mountains in the background that one can only dream of, but it is real!

The hiking was incredible.

The hiking was incredible. My favorite part was hiking up to the laguna Cerro Castillo. I had a bum knee, so my friends did the Horquetas route for three days. I met them on the third day going straight up the mountain. I think the Chilean park folks are still figuring out how to best manage visitors, but I was impressed with the amenities for hikers. Much better than the Argentine Patagonia side at El Chaltan. (we did that last year) Make sure you bring bug spray. There are a lot of horse flies on the way up. I used some strong deet and it kept them away. We only tried one restaurant in town and it was pretty good. (La Querencia) There is a new gas station that is clean and they sell real diet cokes not coke zero. ;) Getting around the area is easy, but you might want to rent a 4x4. I took one day and went to the marble caves. It is about 90 miles south on a dirt road! Well worth it if you have the time. You also need a 4x4 to get to the trailhead to do the laguna route. If you don't have it, you have to park quite a ways a way and hike in. That lot also charges a fee, the trailhead lot does not.

Whole tourist business here revolves around the 12 boat hour trip to the San Rafael glacier. What they do not warn you about is the dreadful three hour karaoke with drunk Chileans on the return journey

There were a couple good restaurants.

There were a couple good restaurants. We had a boat excursion to the glacier planned, but due to weather it was cancelled. We did a nice hike, the Alta-Vista trail instead. It’s a long way to travel to get to Villa O’Higgins, but it is the end or the beginning of the Austral trail, which we completed.

Coyhaique is a great jump off point to travel the Carretera...

Coyhaique is a great jump off point to travel the Carretera Austral. We flew into Balmaceda airport, rented a car and then stayed the night in Coyhaique. Generally car rentals are round trip-no one way drop off, so having a central point to return to is key. Get comprehensive insurance! Many sections of the Carretara are gravel/ all weather roads with lots of bumps, pot holes, etc. We needed to make a claim for a dent on this leg of the trip. Although not essential 4 wheel drive for some sections was useful for stability on the road. Coyhaique has lots of grocery stores and specialty shops for getting provisions. We drove north for several days as far as Puerto Raul Marin Balmaceda. Then headed back to Coyhaique stayed the night and headed south for a number of days as far as Puerto Bertrand. Then back to Coyhaique stayed another night and to Balmaceda airport the following day. (The overnight stays were necessary because the drives took many hours.)

Puerto Tranquilo is a "boom" town.

Puerto Tranquilo is a "boom" town. It looks to be experiencing growing pains and the zoning and growth of the town appears to be in the hands of the people of PT. Hopefully they will have the foresight to zone appropriately and grow in an manner that is good for the town as well as the tourism industry. The main attraction appears to be the San Raphael Glaciefr that is retreating at an alarming rate (thank you global warming.) It is what it is.

Fantastic views, stylish lodge, attentive staff.

Fantastic views, stylish lodge, attentive staff. Beautiful location surrounded by nature, views of valleys and mountains. The food was not exceptional but well prepared. The Lodge itself is well designed in the farmhouse country-side kind of style, huge windows, nice furniture, and it feels like a private retreat rather than a hotel. The manager was exceptional- he was at 5 different places at the same time, finding time to greet all guests, offer meals and services and attention. I only think English as an international language of communication would be desired: we could have used a locals' advice on the Park and the area as our information was rather limited.

A great place by the sea, among fiords.

A great place by the sea, among fiords. Great to start an adventure to Laguna San Rafael glaciers or Puyuhuapi thermae across the beautiful Aysén chanels. The bay itself might be disappointing for nature lovers. Being a fisheries base and port, the coastline is not as clean as it should.
