A warm welcome by the owner, Sinead. She is so kind and helpful. Our family room was very clean and comfortable. The interior of this small hotel is nicely decorated, with music playing at the reception. Really calming atmosphere. There are a few tables at the reception where you can bring your own food and eat as well a fridge for the guests. We enjoyed our stay and will come back in the future.

The ease of arrival, and help in finding our way including with the Parking was a lovely way of being welcomed. The whole stay was very comfortable. The staff were faultless. Everywhere impeccable and lots of details (quality of soap and shampoos etc a nice surprise.) We would mention in particular Tracey who was so incredibly welcoming and accommodating in terms of our planning and change of mind to stay on. Dinner was five star - and we ate in the hotel the whole time it was so good. And that includes the extremely good value for breakfast which kept us going all day.. The managing team was very present and checking in on the customers which is always a big plus ! Great value for money. We will be back …

I had imagined Aviemore to be an old town like Pitlochry and Dunkeld, but in fact all the buildings in the Main Street seem to be fairly new, apart from the railway station. It has lots of shops selling outdoor clothing, and is not very attractive architecturally.

We went to Ballater to be close to Balmoral Castle, where we went to an artisans market on the grounds. We were there in October, so opening of other parts of the castle were not available, due to royal residence use. I would return to this beautiful part of Scotland again if given the chance, to see more of the castle.

The countryside in autumn was spectacular. There are lots of local walks to suit different levels of fitness. The Spey is nearby so iconic itself and for the whisky distilleries along its banks. Interesting local shops. Fresh local produce. Nice folk. Close enough for trips to the Moray Coast and Cairngorms. Golf, fishing, garden nurseries all in easy reach.

Boat of Garten is a small village which has some good features and services, including a pub, a village store, pizza shop, art gallery and historic railway station. It is well located in relation to forest walks and other outdoor activities. For any significant shopping you needs to travel nearby Aviemore, 4.5 miles away. We preferred the peace and quiet of Boat of Garten for our stay in the area.

Kingussie is ideal for people who want beautiful walks or a bit of climbing or cycling. There’s a fantastic bike shop called Bothy Bikes where you can hire e- bikes to explore the area. Nestled amongst the mountains with paths and tracks leading all over what’s not to like? Sadly, the general facilities here have gone. No shop for example. One place did have a sign out for coffee, but there could be an opportunity here for someone. Worth climbing up the Cateran Trail heading south to get stunning views looking down on the village. Also visit the stone circle, old bridge and the church. Just soak up the atmosphere!
