FAQs about hotels in Essex

Close to London, Yet Far Removed

Half-timbered houses lining village greens. Picturesque estuaries and sweeping countryside. Traditional seaside resorts. Affluent Essex has all of this and more.

Its county town Chelmsford has a flint cathedral and waterfront shopping complex. To the east Maldon is a pretty estuary town with a colourful high street, and further south is Southend-on-Sea, a popular seaside town with a good helping of fish and chip shops and the world’s longest pier.

Another pier with amusements is in Clacton-on-Sea, the closest Essex seaside resort to Colchester, the former capital of Roman Britain. City walls remain from this period, and it has a Norman castle and first-class zoo.

From nearby Harwich ferries depart to the Netherlands and Denmark, while Braintree houses the Freeport Outlet Shopping Village. Further west is Stansted Airport, an important hub for low-cost airlines. Closer to London, modern Harlow has the most Essex spa hotels and is close to the Lee Valley Regional Park and Epping Forest.

Brentwood is a bustling commuter town from where you can see the City of London skyline on a clear day. Close by is Basildon with its Hollywood-esque sign, and forming a triangle with them is Grays, home of the huge Thurrock Lakeside Shopping Centre.

Wherever you are staying, Booking.com has an excellent range of guest houses, country inns and hotels in Essex.

We stayed at Kingscliff hotel for a holiday with 7-month old twins. The family room was cosy, clean and spacious: we had a double bed, two single beds and two cots and we managed to place our rocking chairs and a playmat in between. We appreciated that we were given a room on the ground floor and there was no need for us to carry our babies up and down the stairs. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Each day we needed to warm baby milk and sterilise bottles in a microwave, and all our requests were accommodated promptly. The breakfast and evening meal in the restaurant was always delicious, with wide choice. In the restaurant, we were also provided with convenient high chairs for the babies.

The location is amazing as it’s easy to reach by train, and as soon as you reach the location you’re immersed into nature and can’t hear any city noises. Spa is Basic but well maintained and they offer a lot of extra services, can get a bit busy and people are not always respectful to behave spa-like, but time it right during the day and you can have an amazing relaxing experience.

Curtains let in light.

Curtains let in light. Constant noise from planes taking off. Windowfitments all loose letting in noise. HGVs parked right outside, lights and engines left on. Shouting from drivers. No pack up breakfast provided for us to take away as our flights were before 06.30. Hrs. Female receptionist Rude Unhelpful and not interested. Complete waste of time, money. We had no sleep whatsoever. Will not be staying at anymore days inns in future. Absolute rip off, disappointing and disgusting and disgraceful 👺

Colchester is a small town with a very long history.

Colchester is a small town with a very long history. It is also a contemporary place of surprising diversity. Built on a quite steep hill ('Coll') there might be some challenges getting around. That said, the centre of the Town on the top of the hill and immediate district are quite accessible, flat and gently up-or-down. Within that central area you will find a myriad of small independent shops, larger supermarkets, banks etc, several quite decent hotels, and a very latge number of eating and drinking places, both sit-down and takeaway. The character of the Town is pleasing: Nothing too garish, and lots of old and historic buildings. The Castle/Park areas are great for walks, picnics etc. There are some good Galleries, including the [Free to Enter] Civic exhibitions. From Colchester Town it is easy to either walk or take train, bus or car to such interesting locations as the University of Essex, Wivenhoe (on the river), Dedham Vale (Constable painting) etc, etc. Very good train service from London, and onwards from Colchester to Norwaich, Harwich etc.

The Marygreen Manor is a beautiful hotel and I would recommend it, I didn't spend much time in central Brentwood so my opinion wouldn't be helpful to others but it is close to the M25 so very convenient, the Shell petrol garage near Junction 28 M25 is to be avoided at peek times, its just chaos trying to get in or out again, you've been warned!

Very under rated resort.

Very under rated resort. We tend to visit a friend who lives in the area out of season. There is still plenty to do and the beach side walks and gardens are excellent. The Greensward cafe near the Martello tower is a favourite place for breakfast and you can let breakfast go down with a game of crazy golf on the course next to the cafe. Newroz Kitchen on Rosemary Rd is an excellent Turkish restaurant where we like to visit each time we go to Clacton. There are all the usual seaside activities that will keep everyone occupied.

I had a wonderful stay! The room was incredibly cosy and spotlessly clean, making it easy to relax right away. The bed was very comfortable, and I slept perfectly each night. The modern toilet downstairs was also a great touch—fresh, well-designed, and always tidy. Overall, a charming and comfortable place that I’d happily stay in again. Highly recommended!

Braintree is a very historic town with glimpses of a medieval past in its narrow lanes around the town centre. It has suffered from a decline after its main local industry closed down. It could be a lovely place if there was investment in it because a number of traditional buildings still stand, and it has a good sized centre for an upgrade to take place. There's a nice local park near Coggeshall Road and the station. Sadly, there's an ugly multistorey car park near the run down shopping area with a few cafes and low priced shops. Very sad to see it so neglected. Maybe local councillors could take a look at towns like Ludlow or Chichester to see how they've protected the historic heart of their home towns. Happy to return again though. Good luck Braintree people.
