Friendly, knowledgeable staff, fabulous location, great food, really good coffee. Room & bathroom were spacious & scrupulously clean, bed comfortable & fluffy white towels. Wifi strong and parking not far at £4 a day. For me it was the little things that made my stay exceptional. The handwritten note from the housekeeping team, the radio playing low when I entered my room, fresh milk available & the generous toiletries.

The hotel is a historic building dating back to the 15thC and was once the home of Oliver Cromwell's grandfather and later the HQ of Charles I. So it is a place full of history, charm and character. We loved it. Of course some things are dated and the upkeep must be an ongoing task - so if you want all modern fittings, shiny plastic and standard off-the shelf hotel accessories - look elsewhere! The staff are absolutely the tops; the room was warm, comfortable and spotlessly clean; parking is free and adjacent; the breakfast was generous and excellent. It's a minute or two from the town centre on foot, and 10 minutes to the rail station. We ate in the restaurant one evening: the meal was good quality 'pub food' at a reasonable price. We'll be back.
