At first I hadn't realized that the hotel is not at Skye but on another island, which requires a ferry . It made me so nervous that I almost booked another hotel. Thank god, nothing else was available. Raasay and the Distillery is one of the best places we ever stayed in! The hotel is beautiful! Charming and warm. The view from our room was breathtaking, the room was modern and beautifully furnished. Staying on an isolated island is an amazing experience. We met a few members of the team and they were all super friendly, welcoming and had a lot of patience for our endless questions about the isle, the habitants, the roads, the sights, etc. I wish we had time to stay longer. Breakfast was very good, tasty and assorted. The restaurant has a huge glass window facing the sea. The scenery is so beautiful that we couldn't care less about the food :-)

FAQs about hotels on Isle of Skye

Intriguing Isle of Skye

The intriguing Isle of Skye can be experienced in the captivating twinkle in a peaceful loch or the unpredictability of an encroaching cloud mass. This interwoven patchwork of stunning scenery includes mysterious mountains and breath-taking cliffs all crammed into one small island in Scotland’s Inner Hebrides.

Boasting top billing alongside Edinburgh and Loch Ness, this top Scottish destination is the third most visited attraction in this enchanting country. While the weather will dissuade some tourists, its attractiveness lies in the tiny coastal bays and inland moors.

The history of the MacLeod and Donald Clans can be captured in old castle ruins dotted around the island or enjoy intact Highland history by visiting Dunvegan or Armadale Castle on the island. Eilean Donan Castle, located in Dornie on the main tourist route to the island, is another impressive example.

Swamped in Gaelic tradition, the main town of Portree, with its picturesque harbour, is the central tourist hot spot for exploring the island. Visitors generally enter the island by the controversial Skye Bridge, originally a toll bridge, which links the mainland to the island. Ferries are a popular alternative.

Booking.com comprises a range of accommodation to suit all budgets, both on the Island of Skye and at various locations in the Scottish Highlands.

Everything. All was absolutely perfect. The most beautiful place we have been at. The cabins were fabulous, the communication with Scott was fantastic and he was there both of the mornings we were in the ecogampling, so, we could meet him and his absolutely lovely son! We had the three cabins as we where 6, and we all agreed that it was the more beautiful and peaceful place we have been at. It was amazing place to disconnect from the rush of life (works, emails, phones etc) and spend time in family as we all are living in different parts of the world. We will definitive will come back; from my partner and my part, we are already planning a new trip to Skye for next year, spending more time, and definitive we will book this cabins. Absolutely in love with the gampling, Skye and every single person we met. As we wrote in the book, if we have to grade this stay it would be 20/10, cause it was much more than perfect.

The location is beautiful and quiet, right at the sea and set in nature. From here, you can explore the Isle of Skye. The cottages are very cute. We had a large and comfortable room. The people are very friendly and we loved the breakfast. The common rooms had a lovely admosphere. It felt very local, authentic, and rustic. There is a cosy bar where you can warm yourself at the fireplace and have some (very nice) food. We were very sad to leave this place!

A trip here needs time to enjoy the environment around and at the hotel. It is not very near a large town but a village is not far away. But that also makes it special. Make sure to get there during daylight as the roads leading to the hotel are not highways. The food was delicious and well proportioned. We wanted to stay there for longer.

Of all the Hebridean islands I have visited, Raasay for me...

Of all the Hebridean islands I have visited, Raasay for me is the most magical. It cannot be 'done in a day'. Walking up Dun Caan on a clear night (especially if there are Aurora Borealis around), is incomparable, though decent torches and boots are a must for the walk. The Miners' trail and other forestry walks are good treks, with useful information available about their history online and on the info panels at the start in Inverarish Forest. I love wild swimming, and there are several lochans worthy of a short dip - mostly shallow, such as Home Loch by Orchard Wood for beginners - and North Bay offers a good sea swim. For eating out there's a small choice - both the Distillery and Raasay House restaurant have a good selection of local food, catering for vegetarians and meat eaters alike, though their seafood is always a good choice. If you are self-catering, the village shop has a good stock of essentials, especially wholefoods, but it might be worth bringing some supplies, and phoning in advance to see what fresh produce they have available the week you are there. Calum's Road offers spectacular views with a lot of history (see the book by Roger Hutchinson for the background; sadly, the council hasn't had the resources to keep up with the potholes around the island, and driving needs to be cautious). The Outdoor Centre has a good range of activities in the summer, including cycling, kayaking, archery etc.

Sconser is quite small but it is central to most of Skye and the Raasay ferry is on your doorstep (lovely walking at the north of the island and up Dun Can, lots of eagles, Brochel Castle, a distillery). The village is set back on a road parallel to the main road and houses look forward to the sea and Raasay and backwards to the mountain Glamaig (great views both ways). The Sconser Lodge Hotel has a cosy bar with open fireplace. Their restaurant is open to non-residents when they can cope with numbers so nip in and chat about available dates well in advance.

Dunvegan was quite central to travelling across Skye for our various planned activities - whisky tour, puffin tour, walking Quiraing, Fairy Pools and Old Man of Storr. The two shops had enough for the grocery essentials and there were several cafes and restaurants to provide choice. The castle was interesting though a bit pricey.

This is a fairly remote location with spectacular scenery, both at the hotel and close by. Apart from nature (and the great food and drink in the hotel) there is not a lot to do. So relaxing is part of the power of the place. Wander around and watch the odd fisherman leave the quay and go out to their fishing boat. Watch the water and sky change at a moments notice. We were there in February so the whole area was relatively quiet, touring the island was easy from there.

Skye is beautiful! Go!

Skye is beautiful! Go! Public Transport not to be relied upon on the weekend. Portree is a fine central spot to explore this island from. Accommodation is not cheap. Make some restaurant enquiries and eat early as there is not a lot available and many places close early. There's a good little Co'op supermarket to buy yourself something nice to cook in the hostel kitchen. A best option, get a something nice to drink and enjoy your dinner overlooking the award winner view from the hostel lounge. The Isle of Skye is like another world. At least 4 days required.
