We had a GREAT overnight stay at the Three Horse Shoes Hotel - although we actually stayed across the road in their annex - The Stables. Everything was modern, new and perfect. Fully Equipped kitchen, huge comfy bed, washing machine and drying rack with portable heaters, plenty of room to spread out, and security for our touring bicycles. They even included a cooked breakfast for us the next morning - which was unexpected given that we had a kitchen - and it was a great start to our day. We'd certainly stay here again.

A fabulous Romantic Castle set in its own grounds. We had a room in the 'lodge' which had a great view of the castle and gardens. Mock-medieval, with 21st century facilities! Lovely bathroom, tapestry behind the bed! Windows that opened wide to let in the fresh air and birdsong. Breakfast was exceptional. The best eggs-royale I ever tasted. Perfect hollandaise sauce over soft-poached eggs. Staff all friendly, polite and helpful. Truly a 4-star experience.

Last minute booking for us when we discovered camping wasn't for us. Nice comfortable room and bed, warm with an extra oil heater in. The beds in particular were very comfy with a separate seating area and a good tea and coffee tray. Dinner was standard pub grub fare with good prices, needed after a day's trek. Had a lovely view out the window. Breakfast was made to order, we had a full fry. The staff are a family and were very accommodating! Thanks

On arrival, the receptionist quickly checked us in and showed us to our room. This was not in the main building but across the road. The room was warm, fully stocked with treats and homely with all mod cons. Breakfast was served in the main building and up some fairly steep stairs. It was a buffet style with hot food to order. Staff were very helpful and went the extra mile.

We were there to attend an event at The Witham and to catch up with friends. We ate at The Old Well, which was OK. Lunch at a cafe near the Buttermarket which was lovely with good food and coffee. Barnard Castle is very familiar to us, so enjoy shopping there, but as we usually stay with friends, not much experience of eating out. Love the shop Niche in town and the shops are very accessible and some good, individual shops as opposed to the usual chain stores.

Great staff, excellent facilities and set in wonderful grounds, might be a bit isolated for some but for us it was an added bonus. Food was excellent, a buffet style breakfast but poached eggs cooked to order were brilliant and the one evening meal we ate in the restaurant did not disappoint. The spa area was immaculately clean and is well set out with a great steam room and more than adequate sauna, would have booked a treatment but our agenda did not allow. The main car park is some distance away and at the bottom of a steep hill, there is a drop off point and blue badge parking at the entrance but would advise booking this space if it is essential to you. All in all a great experience and likely to book again if we revisit the area.

For 3 people staying we had only one key. An additional key would be helpful. The key safe was difficult to open and when we rang Sykes they were unhelpful. The pressure gauge on the boiler was not working we assumed that was the reason for the heating not coming on. We asked Sykes for help/advice and received no call back. The house was good the parking was adequate.

Bardon Mill village has a decent pub, the Bowes Hotel, which serves reasonable food at a fairly cheap price. The Twice Brewed Inn serves gastropub food of a very high quality, and the prices are good for the quality. A car is essential to reach these places. They are walkable, but the routes do not favour travel on foot, especially in the evening. There is a Sainsbury supermarket within travelling distance by car, SatNav is essential, but be prepared for several detours before reaching your destination!
