I had an exceptional stay at this hotel. It's not large, which adds to its charm, and the staff were simply fantastic. The beach is stunning, with direct access from the hotel – no need to cross any roads. The breakfasts were amazing, offering a wide variety of delicious options. It's conveniently located close to Rethymno, making it easy to explore the area. The spa was a delightful experience, and I highly recommend booking a private room with a sauna and Turkish bath. My teenage daughters absolutely loved it. All in all, a wonderful place to relax and enjoy.

The staff were extremely friendly and helpful- from the reception staff to the young lady in the bar to the housekeepers. The parking in the underground garage was so convenient, the hotel is in pristine condition and the location was an easy coastal walk to everything.

The place was very modern. On arrival at the place, we were greeted by professional and friendly staff. They also talked us through the room facilities and gave us a complimentary sparkling wine. The massage therapist Maria was also amazing in the spa sessions. Extremely professional and we felt so much more relaxed after the therapy session :) 100% recommending their spa facilities. We will definitely book again when we come to Chania again.

This hotel is amazing. We have no negative feedback. The staff are absolutely amazing. We want to give a spacial thanks to Mandarin, he was so kind and extra attentive to any needs we had. I put inna request for my partners birthday and they went over and beyond for this. The next time i visit i will definitely be booking here and will be brining my parents with us :) we really recommend the hotel, it is worth every penny. Lots of restaurants near, a supermarket next door with super friendly staff. We loved our stay here :) thank you so much to all the staff for making our stay thank extra special 🙏🏻

Centuries of History, Days of Sunshine

The largest Greek island, mountainous Crete has stunning beaches, plenty of history and as much or little nightlife as you want. Party town Malia has many bars, clubs and restaurants on its Strip.

Along the coast is the capital Heraklion, a bustling city home to many Crete hotels on the beach, and a Venetian castle guarding its port. Its archaeological museum includes finds from the island’s Minoan era, while just inland are the Roman remains of Knossos.

Also boasting a Venetian castle is Rethymnon, a popular resort with a good number of Crete hotels with private pools on Booking.com. Loggerhead turtles nest in season on the sandy beaches here and at Chania, an important port with an attractive waterfront set against the backdrop of mountains.

On the other side of the island is Aghios Nikolaos, a small fishing town with a picturesque harbour. Just north is Elounda, a popular family resort, and offshore is Spinaloga island, inspiration behind the book ‘The Island’. Matala in the south has a bohemian vibe and intriguing cliff dwellings, while Paleokastro in the east borders Europe’s largest palm forest at Vai.

We booked Knossos beach resort based on reviews, photos and the amazing packaged it offered. It exceeded all our expectations!! From the moment we arrived, we were offered a complimentary room upgrade along with our beach cabana. The staff couldn't do enough to make sure we were well looked after! We arrived early, early check in was not a problem. We well full inclusive for the entire stay (3 nights) and we didn't spend a penny!! Everything is included; amazing buffets for breakfast, lunch and dinner at a very high quality, new food every day, always so fresh with great attention to detail, all our our snacks and drinks by the beach delivered right to our beach cabana were also included (cocktails, beer, food etc). We had wonderful massages in the spa area, we chose to eat in one of the restaurants (not included) for a special meal, you are given a discount and the food was incredible and very reasonably priced!! On our last day, our flight wasn't until 10pm, the hotel allowed us to stay until 6pm with an extra charge of €30, and we kept our all inclusive bands and cabana all day. Honestly, this place was truly so special, amazing sandy beaches, pure clean water, no noise, so quiet, no loud music, tranquil, clean, friendly and the most amazing greek food!! We will be back, it was one of the most relaxing stays I've ever had. Huge than you to Harris who went above and beyond to look after us!! The lovely waitress, Maria waitress, Dimitris beach bar manager, and wonderful massages from Evalina Spa. To the chef, we particularly enjoyed our buffet lunches! Loved it! Hotel was a good size with two pools, two bars/restaurants and it’s right on the beach, as well as being very close to bars, restaurants and shops and a few mini golf/arcade type places. Staff were all lovely and our room was clean with a big balcony overlooking the hotel and the beach. We did all inclusive and the food was amazing with so much choice. Drinks choices were great too, especially liked being able to help yourself to wine, beer and soft drinks. We’ll definitely be staying here if we come back to Crete.

The old town is worth visiting especially during low season, when there is more space and tourists are not jostling for restaurant tables and selfie spots. There are several good restaurants in the old Venetian port, look for places where locals are eating.

We were sadly only here for a quick overnight stay.

We were sadly only here for a quick overnight stay. But during our week in Crete - where we travelled to Chania, Heraklion, and Rethymno - Rethymno was by some margin my favourite destination. Where Chania's historic centre felt as if it had been totally given over to tourism, Rethymno felt more like a substantial town with plenty to explore.

Difficult to judge because we came early in the season when there was a cold wind blowing and not all the places were open. However, there didn't seem to be many places to eat [not a problem for us as there was one excellent place, though would be a problem peak season] . There were a number of apparently abandoned and ill-maintained buildings, which made the place appear less attractive.

It was about a ten minutes walk uphill part way to Koutouloufari, loads of restaurants and bars, a fabulous experience. Walk a little further and you come to Piscopiano, also excellent. Walk down the hill and you come to restaurants with Greek dancing and plate smashing, also excellent.

I’ve visited many times and never tire of the setting, food options and hospitality of locals. The harbour and lake are great for sitting and watching plus artisan shops offer unique items. It’s real Greece

Visited at the beginning of October and a lot of places beginning to close for the season. Town quiet but pleasant. Unfortunately the ferry to Agios Nikolaos does not run anymore so it’s a long drive if you want to visit

The perfect place for peaceful vacation.

The perfect place for peaceful vacation. The city itself is nice but not something extraordinary, but you get the best food in Greece alongside the best beaches in the World! Try Psarropoula, Kakkos and all other beaches in Ferma area. Make beautiful trips to Chryssi Island or Agios Nikolaos (30min), Siteia (45min), Vai, Oropedio Lasithiou etc.

The town is just the right size — not too big.

The town is just the right size — not too big. Its rural and local character really comes through; we even watched goat herders at work just nearby. There’s a good variety of restaurants and several shops. For those with limited mobility, there’s a convenient flat sidewalk running along the beach. If you’re willing to drive a short distance, there are plenty of stunning beaches to choose from depending on the wind direction. It’s an excellent location for beach life and all kinds of water activities. At Paralia Souda, there was also an aid for wheelchair users to get into the water — provided they’re able to transfer into the seat. There’s also lots to do nearby — one tip is to hike up to Saint Paisios Church or visit the nearby mountain villages with their amazing views towards Plakias (see the photo).

Matala is a colorful, beautiful, and lively little town with...

Matala is a colorful, beautiful, and lively little town with a great atmosphere. It is perfect for beach days and a good starting point for day trips to nearby museums and archaeological sites. There is a huge selection of good restaurants. It is a good idea to arrive by car if you want to go on lots of trips and be independent. However, there are also bus connections, e.g. to Heraklion.
