If you are looking for cutting-edge city life, this is not for you. Dundalk is a former railway town, largely built round the (now defunct) works for the GNRI and with much 19th century red-brick architecture. It has a busy high street with a lot of small shops, pubs and restaurants, none are grand, it reminds me of similar towns in the UK before planning blight took hold. A lot of effort seems to have gone into smartening the place up in recent years, which is nice. Would that other towns of its scale have survived so well it would be nothing exceptional, but as so few have, it has a real charm. As a base, it is well sited to explore the countryside around, which has a long and interesting history, with a lot of historic sites.

Drogheda is a lovely town with great transport links (just off the M1 and on the train line to Dublin and Belfast). It had a lot more history than I’d expected in the town with parts of the city walls, a gatehouse and tower still standing. There were lots of friendly cafes and restaurants (Borzalinos and Aisha’s cafe and bistro to name two) too. Drogheda is also a great location to stay for visiting Newgrange passage tombs and the Battle of the Boyne site. In the summer it would also be a great place to stay for the beaches too.

The old boat house is ideally located just a short walk from all the amenities. It was well appointed and had everything we needed. One small criticism was the floor underneath the artificial grass outside felt as it needed some attention due to movement when walking on it

The location was fine and easy to find.

The location was fine and easy to find. The staff need to be more interested in the customers. One was very kind to give my husband ice for an injury he had sustained elsewhere but the breakfast and the service was poor considering it was quiet. The soundproofing between the rooms was poor..say no more!

Beautiful area full of national folklore, scenic beauty, quiet friendly people and situated perfectly for a quiet time or for commuting to larger centres. It is within 2 minutes of the greenway that will safely allow you to walk or cycle in either direction towards Newry or Carlingford. Nearby trek in woods and mountains or can take in local castle and leprechauns in Carlingford along with plenty of eateries and hospitality. Newry is well situated within 10 minutes drive for shopping and bigger city options. There is a shale seashore running along the greenway with plenty of wildlife and seabirds to be seen. Great for evening rambles.

Dundalk in County Louth, the wee county, provided an incredible outpouring of creativity to celebrate Brigid1500. The Northern Lights Light Show in Market Square, the murals and storefronts painted with signs of Spring and Brigid, the cultural production at An Tain Theatre and the County Museum. We were there for 4 days and we made the Proper Cafe "our cafe". The staff were very welcoming and remembered us and the food was great! We also took a bus to Carlingford and enjoyed a short hike and great views of Carlingford Lough. Also, the home of Thomas Darcy McGee, and Father of Canadian Confederation.

The centre of Drogheda is compact and easy to get around on foot. Drogheda is steeped in history and there are several historic monuments in the city. If you are able to tour beyond the city, there are also more rural attractions in the Boyne Valley.

We went for a night away to catch up with a friend, had a delicious meal and drinks and danced till closing time. Felt so safe and the whole town had great vibes. We got up early the next morning for a sauna down by the marina. Could not recommend this any more....just melted all my hangover and troubles away. Lovely people and coffee too.
