We really liked Matsumoto and it was a much more fun and interesting city than we expected. We had an overnight stay, largely to visit the famous castle, after visiting Kiso valley. Would happily have stayed longer.Guest review byrebeccaCanada - 10.0

I went to Nagano to do historical research at three separate facilities about an hours drive from central Nagano City. -- My main objective was visiting the Underground Imperial Headquarters 松代大本営地下壕 (松代象山地下壕) at Matsushiro. The tunnel system is impressive, and the museum next to it adds a lot of background. -- I visited the Hijiri Aviation Museum 聖博物館 in Omi, which displays items and posters full of info about its past as a stop for those on the way to Zenkoji Temple in Nagano City, as well as having a few combat aircraft and a main gun from the Japanese Battleship Mutsu. In an out-of-the-way place. -- I also went to the Mugonkan 戦没画学生慰霊美術館 無言館 in Ueda City. A very somber place since it introduces Japanese artists (showing a couple of their paintings) who died during the war years. Also in a rather remote location. It's unfortunate that all three have signs and displays that are almost exclusively in Japanese. Non-Japanese speakers who are interested in World War II history and happen to be near Nagano may still get something out of a self-tour of the tunnel system in Matsushiro, which is interesting to see in person (and cool in summer). The Wikipedia entry for it seems accurate, much more than you can find on site in English. Be aware that cameras are allowed at Hijiri, but cannot be used in the Mugonkan and in the Matsushiro museum (the tunnels are okay). I don't recommend taking kids to any of these sites.Guest review byTheodoreJapan - 10.0

Karuizawa is a little gem "off the beaten track" for mist travelers to Japan. A tourist loop bus makes it easy to explore. There are coffee shops, restaurants, shops, & onsens. Excellent hiking too! And for those who like to shop, there's a huge outlet mall right next to the train station.Guest review byMichaelUnited States - 10.0

It’s a city with good weather, not too crowded, surrounded by mountains, and offers plenty of activities. There’s an AEON mall, and food is easy to find. It’s perfect for those who enjoy skiing and snow.Guest review byWicharThailand - 8.0

For a tourist location, it was hard to find restaurants open, or willing to seat us (a party of five). But in general the food was good and the location was great for hot springs and access to the snow monkey park.Guest review byTimUnited States - 10.0

Lovely town on histori Nakasendo trail that has several temples and museums. There are several hotels and onsen to stay. It' has enough in town to see or can venture out to other spots by bus or train. It is also near ski areas and parks.Guest review byMaryUnited States - 10.0

If you are considering buying something from bookoff in another city, make sure you visit the one in the Alpico plaza first. They are cheaper than the ones in Osaka. There’s a yakiniku place that’s really good but I can’t remember the name but it’s not far away from the matsumo station. For anyone wanting to visit kamikochi in this rainy season, I suggest you get a hotel here and just book a bus ticket for kamikochi the night before visiting so you’ll know for sure what kind of weather you’ll be dealing with. Also, if you haven’t visited Narai-juku, check it out and complete the trail, you’ll be more than amazed.Guest review byPloychompooThailand - 10.0

Absolutely loved Nagano, so friendly and clean and easy to get around. We lucked out and arrived when the the dance festival was on which was really fun. There are lovely restaurants, good shopping and it’s easy to get around. The old part of the town and the temple are beautiful. We took the bus to see the snow monkeys as well which was worth every penny, even though it was 30 degrees they were still in the onsen, it was magical!Guest review byPippaUnited Kingdom - 10.0

We had a good time at the Ski Resort and the Shopping Outlets and plenty of Food Choices. We were able to hike going to Hoshino Olsen and also had a wonderful breakfast in the area. The outdoor ice skating area was also great. Bus schedules are far in between but you can opt to take taxi although more expensiveGuest review byDerrick RoyPhilippines - 10.0
The location was great with great scenery.
The location was great with great scenery. Ten minutes walk through snow trails to Happoone ski lift. Ten minutes walk to village for rentals & restaurants (Ooyokuri restaurant*****)! The staff was excellent and accommodating of late evening arrival. Inside & outside onsens were very good. Breakfast was great with selection & taste. Twelve (7adults, 1teen, 5children) give it a big thumbs up! It was end of season, so shops and restaurants were closed, snow was a bit slushy for me, good for kids. Plus side few people, no congestion or lines.Guest review byIrvingUnited States
