We found the Greenstone Retreat by pure luck, being stranded in bad weather. Kate and the team took us in at very short notice and we couldn't believe our luck when we got there. The villa is a wonderful warm and cosy place with everything you can possibly need and lots of character. We only stayed one night but will definitely stay longer next time we're in the area!

The service of the office was pleasant, the room was very clean. The hotel provides a possibility to wash and dry the clothes at a low price and it is really convenient.

Lovely little village in the mountains.

Lovely little village in the mountains. We took the glacier helicopter flight which was spectacular. Also there are lots of walks to choose from. Plenty of restaurants also in the village. Franz Josef is a worthwhile tourist destination for a short visit

Great promenade for walking or running.

Great promenade for walking or running. Although beach was full of wooden debris, great setup. Wonderful sunset. Town pretty much closes down on Mondays but we managed to find an open restaurant. The Glow Worm Dell, really cool and the Hokitika Gorge a must see!

If you come to Fox - you have to take the chopper up and do the glacier landing and walk around - it's just another world. Otherwise, you are doing this part of NZ a disservice. There are plenty of amazing short walks which just about any fitness level can do. Many amazing views and this part of the world is simply beautiful - it can very quickly put in to perspective just how poor humans are at managing our other natural habitats in our normal living domain (cities/suburbia/sprawl). I'm very glad to have seen Fox and surrounding areas.

Interesting little town (village), with a pub having the hard antler bar. Our midday meal there was good. We did not explore the town. The Heartland Hotel, where we stayed overnight, is bit out of town, and is a self-contained pub/motel.

The suspension bridge over the Hokitika gorge hike was most impressive. While we didn’t make it all the way down to the 2nd bridge (which was apparently closed for repairs) we were happy with the opportunity to still across the first bridge and get some great pics. The Tree Top walk was rather —meh— not sure it was worth the cost of admission; my sister was seriously freaked out by the heights of the walkway so she didn’t enjoy it too much. However, the cafe there is quite good!

Ross is a lovely small town.

Ross is a lovely small town. Its quiet and relaxed and the Top Ten Holiday park is even more quiet and relaxed. We enjoyed a fire on the beach and relaxing walks in the surrounding area. The museum was very interesting and its close to a lot of other really neat places on the west coast.

Beautiful scenic retreat, with waterfall and true NZ country vibe. Unfortunately, I saw the host yelling at a guest who arrived at night, for asking where the kitchen was located. I felt surprised, because the host was polite to me. I would still recommend that you stay here, but maybe just read the provided map if you're arriving at night!

The glacier is not reachable anymore.

The glacier is not reachable anymore. The area is roped off from a great distance away. A few years ago we walked right up to bottom of the glacier. The only way to see the glacier now is by helicopter at a great cost.
