Perfect stay. The monks are super friendly even if they don’t speak english. The food is good and very traditional and the rooms are great. Spacious tatami style, loved it so much I regret not staying longer. They even give you a flashlight if you want to explore at night. The placement is perfectly fine.

The reception by the monks was delightful, and you could tell they were happy to have us. My wife and I had a wonderful dinner - the best vegan food I've had. We also got to take part in the monks morning ceremony, including burning wood chips in an incense bowl, chanting the heart mantra with the monks and being told the story of the temple. This was available in both japanese and english. We were also allowed to walk around (and take pictures) of their sacred hall, which was incredibly beautiful and rich in history and culture. A true delight!

We could check in even though we came early. Everyone was welcoming and friendly. We got Kaiseki style breakfast and dinner and enjoyed the bath. Morning pray was very spiritual. We are happy we were able to habe such spiritual experience in our stay and in Koyasan.

The temple stay was beautiful, serene and extremely hospitable. For our two week stay in Japan, Shukubo Hojoin was probably our favourite. The chef specifically made us a different menu for the second day of our stay, and our request of eating a bit earlier due to having a guided tour that night was met with great hospitality. The food was beautifully served and delicious, we especially loved the different varieties of tempura, tofu and lotus root. Our room was gorgeous, with a beautiful view of the garden, and the futons were comfortable and warm. We also loved the tea we got in our room as a welcoming gift, it was super tasty. The sento was very nice and relaxing after walking around Koyasan for the day. The morning prayer was also a great experience to witness. After our 13-hour flight to Kansai airport, this quiet and relaxing stay was exactly what we needed to recover from the jet lag, and we felt very welcome. Koyasan as a whole truly felt otherwordIy, and Hojoin was a big part of that experience. I felt bad we had to rush out on our last morning to catch an early train, I wish I could have properly thanked our hosts for our lovely stay!

Amazing experience at all levels, the lodging was perfect, I was expecting something basic but it was rather similar to a ryokan, big rooms with confortable futons, traditional Japanese furnitures, yukata, complimentary tea in the room, good and very diversified meals, commun and private sento with a big bath tub. Highly spiritual moments on the fire ceremony and the morning prayer, moreover we had a free tour of more than an hour to learn a lot on oesoteric buddhism and the ancient history of the place.

The dinner and breakfast were wonderful, and very carefully prepared. The room was a beautiful traditional-style one, with tatami and futon. The staff were all extremely helpful and kind, and we were even able to purchase some charms. The public bath was very clean and well-kept, and it was interesting to experience it. Thank you for a lovely stay!

It a beautiful temple, it is very well kept. The room was very spacious and comfortable, all in tatami floor, tastefully decorated, very clean and well maintained, with aircon available and even a TV. I loved that there was a complimentary tea, a yukata and a toothbrush. The temple has a bath (onsen) available and a morning prayer ceremony.

Dinner had so many vegan dishes and they were delicious. Breakfast was smaller but still filling. It won't be a western breakfast. The futon ended up being comfy and warm but the halls were cold in the morning. I suggest arriving at the start of check in to take full advantage of everything there is (enjoying the pond, onsen, tea in room while reading the info on ceremonies). Location was great for the big 3 sites, if you don't mind walk 20 minutes in either direction.

Unique experience of lodging in a beautiful buddhist temple. The place has a very special atmosphere. The (buddhist vegetarian) dinner and breakfast were rich and very tasty. The staff was super welcoming and friendly. Good onsen bath. Traditional Japanese-style room (tatami mats and futon beds) was really spatious and comfortable.

The temple, ryokan, grounds, and surrounding areas are magnificent. The staff were very accommodating, and the dinner and breakfast were exceptional. I still dream about their miso soup and pickled- and tempura vegetables. Our room was superb. We enjoyed staying in a traditional setting, wearing a yukata, and keeping warm under a kotatsu.

You are warmly welcomed by the monks who explain the program of your stay. Whilst dressed in your supplied yukata, you eat dinner and breakfast, creating a ryokan feel to your stay. The morning prayer was very uplifting and a wonderful experience to observe. The in-house onsen was an added bonus and very warming.

Staff are really nice and accommodating. Our room is really clean. A great place to experience Ryokan (A type of traditional Japanese inn that typically features tatami-matted rooms, communal baths, and other public areas)and Kaiseki (traditional multi-course Japanese dinner). You also get to experience the morning prayer. Location is also walking distance to some of the tourist spots and a 15-20min. walk from bus station. Excellent experience for us! Highly Recommended!

Very welcoming monks Very close to the bus station and at a walking distance from the temples (careful, you must be back to the ryokan by 5pm) Dinner and breakfast (vegetarian) are delicious and served directly in the room The room was cosy and traditional, with comfortable futons, and yukatas are available There is a large hot tub, similar to an onsen to be shared with the other guests, this is where you shower too (you must be comfortable with nudity) We attended the morning ceremony, a unique moment
