Izumi-so was my first Ryokan experience and couldn't recommend it more, the host was lovely, kind and accommodating. My room was very nice and the breakfast was delicious; the open air onsen was also lovely at night! Great location, about a 1-2 minute walk from the center of Gero. 10/10

Amazing kaiseki meals with 10+ dishes for breakfast and dinner. Very fancy. They serve sake or umeshu with your dinner as well. Rooms are huge and have balcony as well. The hotel onsen is very large and has a lounge area. Lots of locals stay here. I was the only foreigner. Staff were so considerate. Coin laundry just across the street. Beautiful views of the river and mountains. Just 5-10 minute walk from the shopping area.

Both dinner and breakfast was impressive! We had all-you-can-eat buffet for both and dinner included all you can drink certain alcohol. There's something for everyone! Having a choice of yukata design was a nice touch for women while welcome drink/ice cream was great option for kids! The onsen was everything we hoped it would be. Just like the photo shows.....Usually, the bath will become unavailable for cleaning but this hotel allowed guest to use bath extended time. I was able to enjoy bath in the middle of the night as well as early in the morning. The shuttle bus available per requests. We didn't have to wait more than 10 mins for next ride. Everyone in the hotel was so courteous and nice.

We enjoyed a remarkable stay at YAMAGATAYA nestled in a serene, less crowded area along the slope, away from the main street. This charming, well-maintained hotel blends tradition and modern comfort. Our renovated room, complete with a spacious sitting area, was a perfect retreat. The meal plan was served in a private dining room with an annexed toilet, offering convenience and privacy. The quality amenities, including rejuvenating onsens, added to the comfort and relaxation. A perfect getaway combining history with contemporary luxury. Highly recommended for a memorable stay!

There are 3 different onsens, 1 at each of their buildings for us to try. Very relaxing experience. The hotel location is amazing. It is walkable within 2 3mins of the Gero station but there is also an available shuttle bus at Gero station if u have too many luggages. The breakfast spread is fabulous too with many varieties of japanese dish in bite sizes portions to try out, help with preventing food wastage also. My kids were both excited to sleep on the prepared futon in the ryokan style room

Very clean and modern with a ryokan-atmosphere. The room we stayed in was great, the futons were comfortable and the room itself was large. Nice that breakfast was included too.

The inn was the perfect distance from everything we wanted to try. They gave us yukata to use during our stay that we used multiple times. The breakfast was great and we got a different breakfast on the second day! The private onsen was incredibly comfortable.

The futon was comfortable, the breakfast was complete and varied (includes both continental and Japanese breakfast) and the onsen hot springs were nice (they provided towels and you had a space to dry yourself up where you could find creams and other amenities).

EVERYTHING. The dream come true in a ryokan (and affordable). I truly love the private onsen. It was bliss. The room, the yukatas, the ambience, the fact that look like is brand new construction but in a traditional aesthetic. A dream.

This 93 year old ryoakn was an experience we will never forget! Surrounded by breathtaking nature on the outskirts of Gero, this ryokan provides a very authentic Japanese onsen experience. It was a joy to bathe in the thermal waters in the private bath in our room, as well as the public indoor and outdoor baths. The view from the room was amazing. We booked a traditional Japanese-style tatami room, and it was spacious, with a balcony, and mentioned private bath, an awesome experience.

Traditional and foreigners can get a good experience at this ryokan. All style dress in traditional kimono or yukata. They have staff who speaks English. Very organised check in process, you can tell they are well verse in receiving big volumes of guests. Very efficient. Onsens are great. As guests, there were 3 to choose from.
