* excellent location, in a quiet part of the onsen town between a lot of trees * open-air baths were very spacious and opened up to a small river * indoor bath was easy to use * kaiseki menus were quite delicious even for western tastes * we liked the indoor decorations of the room and the tatami area was convenient, it didn’t extend to the whole room
Shinmeikan is a truly amazing ryokan/ onsen. The whole building just oozes authenticity. Great tatami style rooms overlooking the river, super friendly staff who will help you with all your needs. Great onsen baths, especially the cave bad is spectacular. Dinner and breakfast are equally high quality and display a variety of Japanese cuisine. Absolute perfect place if you want to experience traditional Japanese onsen style ryokan.

The serene atmosphere of the Ryokan, with its beautiful tatami rooms , and peaceful environment, provided the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. Our family enjoyed the delicious kaiseki meals served in Ryokan and loved relaxing in the private onsen. We highly recommend this Ryokan to families looking for a unique and authentic Japanese experience.
The cave onsen was a unique experience. They have private indoor n outdoor hot springs for booking. The English speaking female non-japanese staff was very friendly and pleasant. The ryokan also sent us to the bus stop when they learnt we are taking the bus to Hakata. Dinner was served around a fire place, giving a warm, fuzzy feel.
Our room was really comfortable, with a 3Tatami corner and a great view of Aso. They have a lot of Spa options including private onsen and pool which we enjoyed a lot.
