It was such an amazing experience. Thank you to the monk staff who were so kind and patient and guided us through meditation custom and practices. Our room included shojin ryori (buddhist vegetarian cuisine) breakfast and dinner which was very balanced and filling. I feel a sense of gratitude and peace coming back to Tokyo. I would like to go every year if I can.

Minshuku Sumiya is gunstig gelegen in de wijk Kawayu Onsen in Tanabe, en ligt op 12 km van Hosshinmon Oji Shrine, 20 km van Kumanokodo Nakahechi Museum of Art en 23 km van Kumanoshi Kiwakozan Museum. Kohei the owner really puts his heart into the place and hosting guests! From the room to the food everything has a history. Also using the natural hot spring closeby is really cool! Make sure not to burn yourself :)

From the reception to the checkout, everything was perfect. The monks were friendly and extremely helpful as well as being discrete. The complex is set back from the road so it is really peaceful. Dinner is served around 17:30 and is absolutely delicious. You are in a private room screened off from the other guests. The dinner is a highlight of the stay in Koya-san. I would just advise that this experience is not really recommended for younger kids and teenagers with limited food options. Dressing up in a yukata may be fun but a 9pm curfew and peaceful atmosphere isn't conducive to rest and relaxation either for them or the other guests. If you intend to do the night tour of the cemetery just remember the curfew. In summer nightfall is around 7:30. Before breakfast we participated in the morning service with everything explained in English A unique experience on Koya-san and an interesting insight into Buddhist practice.

高野山 宿坊 総持院 -Koyasan Shukubo Sojiin-, located in the center of Mt. Koya, is a Japanese-style accommodation in a Buddhist temple located to the west of Sohonzan Kongobu-ji and in front of Danjo Garan. We had an amazing stay at Sojiin. The location is perfect, just a short walk from the bus stop and right opposite Danjo Garan. The room is spotlessly clean and very spacious, and we had a wonderful sleep on the futons.Both dinner and breakfast were delicious and very varied. The morning ceremony was a memorable experience as was the hospitality of the monks. Koyasan, especially in winter, is out of this world, and staying at Sojiin only intensified this impression.
