Although not a large town, there are a nice selection of shops along the Main Street, 5 museums catering for young and old, historical town walking trails and nature walks and a lovely Victorian park.
The selection of cafes, pubs and restaurants will satisfy any foodie lovers requirements, and on the Sunday that we visited, there was an Artisan street market and a car boot to wander around.
Parking is plentiful and cheap, and free 6pm-8am.

Dorchester has the feel of a small town with many delightful old buildings, cafes, pubs and restaurants, all seemingly selling good food. There are many museums in and around the town centre, often easy to get to on foot. There is Roman history here, medieval too, a long military heritage and of course the dinosaurs of the famous Jurassic coast. Too many things to do in just one weekend, and many more attractions only a short car-drive away. The shops? - Well we never had time to explore them!

The Dorchester Museum is excellent.
The Dorchester Museum is excellent. We called in just to find out about the Iron Age fort and ended up learning so much more. Everything is very clearly displayed and explained in enough detail, but not too much. There are some remarkable Roman mosaics, a good overview of a fascinating history of the area, and an interesting section about Thomas Hardy. We were there in cold, wet February weather, so outdoor activities didn’t suit the weather. At different times of the year the outdoor activities in the area have great promise.

We only went for my cousin wedding at the towns registry office, that was a very good experience. We had intended to look around the town on the following day but the weather was so foul we travelled back home.
The town for what we saw had some wonderful historical building, and we would have liked to explored more

Only visited for the afternoon and evening meal.
Only visited for the afternoon and evening meal. The Keep Museum is excellent with a great view from the top. Excellent Italian/Fish restaurant "Al Molo" (which was the main reason for visit). Would definitely visit again.
Stunning location overlooking a running Brook. Nikki, the owner was extremely gracious in upgrading us to the cottage from our room in the house as it was not booked for the duration of our stay. The cottage was spacious with a large balcony right over the Brook, could see lots of wild birds in the mornings. Also only a short drive from Dorchester so finding places to eat was easy.
Her knowledge of the Dorset area is also fantastic and she would give is valuable tips on how to plan our days every morning
The location of Clematis House was perfect for us, in a very pretty village, just a few minutes from Dorchester and a superb base for seeing Dorset. The house was extremely clean and comfortable and was very well equipped to ensure we had an enjoyable stay. The information booklet was comprehensive and contained all the information that we required. The property has a beautiful courtyard garden and is very quiet and peaceful. The welcome tray from the owners was much appreciated.
Ideal location if you want to be in the centre of Dorchester. Excellent choice of pubs, restaurants etc. Busy, buzzy small county town with good choice of shops including a Waitrose, local museums, all within walking distance.
17th C hotel has historic connections, with nicely decorated rooms, pretty rear garden with a conservatory to sit and eat breakfast. Breakfasts are freshly cooked and you are looked after in a friendly and hospitable fashion by the owners and staff.
Stayed here for 2 nights. Only 5 mins from Dorchester and 25 mins from Weymouth.
It is a wonderful place-a beautiful Hotel with amazing views, quiet, wonderful staff, amazing breakfast with lots of options, large bath towels, bedroom large and was 100% clean and COVID safe,
gorgeous gardens and can sit out, homemade choc brownies and water complimentary in the room.
Highly recommend
Tip-you can order fresh milk from front desk,
The property is situated in a quant setting by the riverbank surrounded by the beauty of nature. Yet,Dorchester and a vast choice of dining area are within just a few miles. The contrast of which offers both the still and peace of the property location and then those seeking a more lively visit, have the bustle of fine eateries within reaching distance.
Fantastic B&B, the best bed we have ever slept in...
Great position on the outskirts of Dorchester, close to a shop
The hosts are excellent and friendly. A very tasty breakfast and set up in a way you talk to other guests. We slept in one of the lodges to the rear which was exceptional, clean and tidy.
All the best for the future Gary
Receptionist was kindness and polite. Room was tidy and clean, water supply in hot and cold water is so strong and good. The manger, Steve was so kind and nice and helpful. The location of the hotel is so convenience. Overall I feel comfort and leisure staying at Best Western Wessex Royale Hotel Dorchester and appreciate their service.
We had a great two night stay at Ashley House which is located in the beautiful Dorset countryside. Emma and Graeme were super hosts, very warm and welcoming. There is a wonderful pub a short drive away which serves great food and Dorchester is close by. It’s well located for trips to Weymouth and the beach. We’ll be back!
Excellent location, good size carpark to rear of the property, the interior of hotel is absolutely stunning, bedrooms are so lovely, complete with Beautiful Bramley toiletries in bathroom. Excellent choice for breakfast and food delicious.
We loved our stay and will book again if we're ever in Dorchester again.
I love every thing in this hotel. The overall ambiance made you feel special. The hotel was well decorated. The room was amazing. It had a nice view. We enjoyed taking a picture at every corner of the hotel
Moreover, all the staffs were polite and friendly. Moreover, breakfast was superb!
We were staying there because my parents were on holiday in Weymouth, my father was taken to hospital in Dorchester so we needed local accommodation. Mark was lovely and bent over backward to accommodate us and help us out especially with my elderly mom.
The proprietor Noorani was so kind, welcoming, and helpful. She is also an amazing cook! So lovely to be right in the heart of Dorchester. I really appreciated Noorani’s knowledge of the history of the town and region, which is fascinating.
The hotel was in a very small village that was very quiet. The restaurant and bar facilities at the hotel were exceptional and the rooms were fantastic. The location was close to Dorchester and Poole which suited are requirements perfectly.
The breakfast was wonderful! Great coffee, food, and selection. We felt totally spoiled and find it hard to return to cereal and toast at home. I highly recommend The King's Arms. We'll look for hotels by this company on our next UK visit.
Superb Breakfast that outshone many hotels. Home cooked with good ingredients that are not cheap. Bacon and sausages where lovely. Well looked after over the breakfast period. Good coffee to which is important to us.
Our room was clean and comfortable and the breakfast was sufficient to set us up for the day. The Inn is in a quiet hamlet outside Dorchester and as such is centrally situated for touring Dorset.
Lovely boutique hotel in the centre of Dorchester. Great personal touches, attention to detail and superb breakfast. Splendid hosts and would highly recommend
