The Concierge and Bar Manager - the only two kind souls we encountered. Like us they were shown little respect. This hotel has a significant culture of arrogance.

I liked the harbour area for strolling and eating with the market areas for shopping. Knossos was a wonderful experience as was the Heraklion Archaeological Museum. Give yourself two to fours hours to really see Knossos, depending on the crowds and three to four hours to see everything in the museum.

The town/city has many new buildings after WW2.
The town/city has many new buildings after WW2. There is an extensive shopping area with many restaurants and bars, the older buildings are either being replaced or renovated, but the outlying suburbs need development and some proper Town & Country planning application. The boundaries between domestic, retail, industry & commerce need greater definition.
Great potential for tourism, with areas of domestic and tourist housing showing signs of its artistic residents "flare".

This is good for a weekend trip, but if you are staying longer hire a car and tour, landing here and returning via Chana. We took out the extra insurance via Booking.com, very wise because the vehicle was hit by a driver while parked, who drove off. Due to the state of the roads and the increased traffic this is common, there was another couple in the hire office that had also been hit while parked. Standards of driving in Greece are poor. Booking.com paid out within 24 hours of the claim. This was a return visit to Crete after 20 years. The nation is in steep decline with appalling infrastructure and an unhappy population. We will not return.

Heraklion is now the main city of Crete, where years ago it was Chania. Over recent years the central area has been upgraded with paved walking to the shops and square. If you look upwards you can still see the signs of previous Venetian times and around old constructions. There is a street market area now selling the usual tourist pieces, which has changed from a market that had fruit, vegetables, fish etc. The side streets still have the small restaurants of old. As you walk down towards the harbour area you should visit Ligo Krasi, Ligo Thalassa as their food is superb traditional Cretan and used by locals. The harbour area is good to walk along and watch the cruise ships and ferries. Ferries leave from Heraklion daily to local islands such as Santorini and provide an excellent service. The modernised bus station just 15 minutes from centre will allow you to move to all areas of Crete on clean efficient buses. Heraklion can get very busy during the weekend or bank holiday times, when locals visit and sit around the square in the cafes and small bars, providing a great atmosphere.

Heraklio is a great place to visit!.
Heraklio is a great place to visit!. We stayed for over a month and were never bored. There is a very extensive pedestrian area with a huge variety of shops, places of cultural interest, restaurants and snack bars. The local cuisine is reasonably priced. The city is very busy with locals and tourists mixing in the pedestrian areas.
Heraklio is a great base for visiting the rest of the island as most of the major urban areas are also on the north coast. There are very efficient local and regional bus services and of course car and moped hire.
For those interested in history and culture Heraklio is the place to visit. I do recommend reading up on the incredible history of the island before visiting as this will help the visitor better understand the context of what they are visiting.
We visited in March to April and combined a city holiday with a beach holiday. There are two very long beaches very near the city centre.
Almost everyone we met spoke very good English so we never really got to use any of the little Greek we learned before travelling. In one month we never used any cash as all business take electronic payment per mobile phone, credit cards etc.
Location was excellent, easy walk into the old town. Plenty of stirs and restaurants nearby. The property is contemporary with excellent space very comfortable bed. So enjoyed the pool. Living room is spacious and the kitchen is well equipped. Excellent bathroom with walk in shower! The reception/concierge staff (Maria & Sophie) were so lovely and always with a smile and and spot on with reservations , be it restaurants tours or boats!
Gear roof top very comfortable and perfects surrounding views of Crete!
The location is very good. Near to restaurants, shops, pharmacy and bus station. The hotel is modern, clean and the bed is very comfortable. Also, you have a security box on the room. The breakfast was generous and you have several options from salty to sweets. Before booking here, I've read other customer reviews, and I don't understand the bad reviews. I highly recommend Olive Green Hotel! the receptionist were very helpful and friendly! 🙂
A classy hotel that is well located to the port and the town. Its five star all the way.
Big well designed and comfortable rooms. Large spacious bathrooms.
Professional and friendly staff.
Fabulous and very creative, delicious breakfast. Great ambiance.
No fuss no bother. Great atmosphere, and quiet throughout the hotel.
Highly recommended, and one of the best hotels in Hiraklion and Crete.
The location of the hotel is a perfect starting point for walking around the city centre and exploring Iraklion's main landmarks.
We particularly enjoyed the direct view on the quiet, fascinating old square and the breakfast served in a very relaxing atmosphere at the nearby cafe.
The room is very modern, spacious, clean and comfortable, with soft beds and excellent bathroom.
Nice, clean hotel and great value for money! The staff were so friendly and the location was great near the waterfront, a parking builiding nearby that costs 8 euro for 24 hours and it is a short stroll to the old centre. It had a mini fridge, comfy beds, nice bathroom with plenty of towels. It exceeded my expectations for a basic 4-bed room. I would definitely recommend!
Although I could not enjoy the hotel as much I will have loved to because my husband's flight was delayed, both Georgia and Marielena at front desk have don't their best to make my stay as good as possible
The hotel is super well placed to visit the old Heraklion and it venetian port.
I also loved the selection of wines & snacks from Crete (Inc cheese!) in the fridge
Helen was an amazing host. She was available at all times and ensured we were able to check in without issue. She offered to call a taxi for me which was very helpful. The place is on point for the price. haves everything you need and is super CLEAN. if I come back to Crete I will again use this as an airport staging hotel. Thank you Helen.
It is a warm local hotel, quite near the beautiful Venetian Port and the animated 25 August avenue (I could stroll along this avenue everyday without getting bored! ).
The receptionist people are the nicest. They have saved me from a taxi situation at 4am, without them it would be very difficult to get a taxi in Crete at that hour.
Modern decor. Rooms & bathrooms are as good as a 5 star hotel. Room amenities also as good as a 5 star hotel. Complimentary coffee, wine & water in room. 5 minutes walk to the ferry terminal. About 10 minutes walk to all water side restaurants. And anything you need call Maria- she will take care of it. Awesome place
To be honest I didn’t get the bad reviews, the hotel is well placed, extremely clean and well ran. yes, the rooms are small but refurbished with everything you need, including AC and fridge. I had a very nice stay and I definitely recommend. it’s not the 5* all inclusive type, more of a city hotel with a nice charm
Our flight to Crete was very early so we got to hotel at 9:30 am. Our room wasnt ready yet but they invited us to have breakfast for free. Very nice meaningful touch. Breakfast buffet was great, as were the views from the terrace. Room aircon was strong and bed comfortable. Amazing location.
The apartment was excellent it has everything necessary for a place away from home while visiting Crete. We were greeted with sweetness to the apartment.
P.s The apartment has a view to the sleeping giant of the mountain, with a bit of a good eye you'll see it from the balcony
We booked Sofia Hotel for just one night as our flight was scheduled to arrive too late for transfer to our destination in Western Crete. The hotel is quite near to the airport and, for the price, excellent.
Charming lady at the reception, very friendly and all shinny and smiling
Good location in comparison to city centre/airport
Free parking at a location nearby but also easy to park around the hotel
The hotel is pretty close to a McDonalds and also pretty near both to a bus station for the local buses and to the bus terminal in order to go to another places in Crete like Gouves, for example.
