A beautiful city that is easily walkable and felt very safe. Close to the mountains the scenery is stunning. We ate at Cactus Club cafe by the harbour which was lovely, Coras for breakfast which is a diner style, the food was plentiful and very delicious and Joeys which was nice enough but service not great. Lots to see and do we enjoyed an evening stroll along the harbour front and hired bikes to cycle round Stanley Park and to Granville Island (cycle lanes everywhere so very easy to do). We were only there for a couple of days before and after a cruise but would definitely visit again.
North Vancouver is a lovely area just across the bay from Downtown Vancouver. Easy access across the bay via the regular ferry gives you the best of everything. North Vancouver seems a nice safe neighbourhood with a nice choice of bars and restaurants. You also have easy access to the hills and mountains where there are some great walks and stunning scenery.
We used the hop on hop off bus one day to get around which was easy and you could easily know when the next bus would arrive. Apparently over 50% do not have English as their first language so some people had trouble understanding us, so we just spoke slower. We loved Stanley Gardens, the Steam clock, the Architecture and amazing mountains in the distance. We mainly ate at the Inn where the food was delicious. Is was sad to see the homeless people though and one chap in particular who was bent over in half and had to stop every 100 meters or so to rest.
I've stayed here numerous times before and was surprised to be booked in a very small basement bedroom . There was no air conditioning in the room but only an open basement window. Not impressed considering the number of previous bookings. Otherwise the facilities met with our previous expectations. lovely view and great kitchen facilities with several breakfast options.
Food: 1. Mr Shawarma at Burrard station. Best shawarma in the city by far, and the cheapest. Usually cheap is "meh" but this outclasses anything the city has to offer. 2. Mount Everest - fantastic hakka. 3. Gastronomy. Great pizza Places to go: 1. Stanley Park - no explanation needed. Do NOT rely on the Shaw/Mobi bikes. Rent bikes thru other means 2. Queen Elizabeth Park 3. Bloedel conservatory 4. Van Dussen Botanical 5. China Town - Dirty, full of homeless people 6. Burnaby - Metropolis mall - Biggest mall in BC 7. Gas town - vibes and that silly steam clock 8. Canada place and the harbor - nice views 9. Granville Island - cool vibes, hippy spot 10. Richmond - I can tell it's a nice place to go, but I haven't had the chance. Transportation & Getting around town - Buy a day pass for $11.25, allowing you to travel by bus, sky train, and ferry to north van, unlimited uses for that particular day. Downtown Vancouver is super walkable.
For a quick staycation we had friends coming from the island as well as the valley and decided North Van would be a good middle distance. We had few expectations and assumed we would be shopping and sipping drinks with good friends. It turned out that it was very easy to get around between sea bus to down town and bussing up to the parks. The shipyards area and lower lonsdale is rich with great little stores and non-chain restaurants which was such a treat.
