Outstanding and unique experience. Warm welcome (we arrived early and were able to check in immediately). Good location for exploring Koyasan town. Beautiful surroundings, stunning interior decor in the dining rooms, nice onsen, astonishingly good vegetarian food. The temple master made us feel very welcome at the prayer service and explained everything. Super friendly staff and smiling monks :)

Amazing experience!!! There is a heater in the room, so even if you are traveling during the cold season, you can sleep in a heated room. Great typical dinner, and excellent location.

The highlight of our trip to Japan. A genuine experience of Shingon Buddhism with friendly and helpful monks to guide us; exquisite traditional plant-based cuisine; magical gardens and powerful ceremony. Luxurious pilgrimage experience. Arigato!

The temple is well set up to receiving international guests and many of the employees spoke English well. The room was gorgeous with calligraphy decorations on the walls, and the shared toilets and bathing area were clean and tidy. The gardens surrounding the building are beautiful, the meals were quite nice and the highlight were the evening meditation and morning chanting. That is what you’re really paying for here, to be allowed into the practices of the temple.
Sojiin, located in the center of Mt. Koya, is a Japanese-style accommodation in a Buddhist temple located to the west of Sohonzan Kongobu-ji and in front of Danjo Garan.

The Shukubo is located in the west part of Kōyasan far enough to the centre to have a peaceful environment but close enough to get in approximately 5min to the main points of interests. The rooms are spacious and confortable with heating futons as nights can be quite cold. The monks are so kind and the food was perfect, definitely recommend.
The train and cable car were thrilling. The forest surroundings gave the town a cozy feel and kept the air so fresh.. The English Guide Club provided a very knowledgeable guide, Mayumi. I learned much more than what you find in books. The burial site is really amazing - a must see. There are some great coffee shops too. It's worthy of a repeat visit.

This temple is very remote.
This temple is very remote. The area is beautiful and the hiking was great. There is an extra tour option of the cemetery. I thought with the price we were paying that this tour should have been included.

Pretty town, huge graveyard, worth exploring but just one...
Pretty town, huge graveyard, worth exploring but just one day needed - Either pay for the decent hotels and experience the true temple koyasan experience or book a lodging and explore the area. Our expensive (but cheapest temple room) felt super touristy and set up. Food was awful. - Its pretty long to get there from Osaka also.

I would definitely recommend the experience of staying one...
I would definitely recommend the experience of staying one night at any of the temples and also the Okonuin Night Tour is a real must! Apart from one person and the Guide (Nobu) the staff of Eko-in was somewhat arrogant and be prepared for an uncomfortable and short night, but a delicious and huge dinner and breakfast. The sights and nature are stunning and beautiful, really serene and perfect to contrast the buzz of every big City. We bought the digital Heritage Pass and tool the Limited Express Train to Koya, I would recommend! Apart from the Bus from the Cable Car to our Temple we walked to every sight by foot, since they are not far from each other and the whole town is a complex of a „Sight“. The Tokugawa Mausoleum was especially astonishing, since it’s full of Japanese history.
We will absolutely visit Koyasan again, but I would not choose a Templestay again.

Okunoin Cemetery night tour is a must do activity.
Okunoin Cemetery night tour is a must do activity. So much of our understanding of Japanese Buddhism and Koyasan’s role in its history was informed by the monk who was our guide. We checked out Okunoin Temple and the cemetery the next day, too. It is a very special place.

It is imperative to stay in a temple - the vegetarian meals...
It is imperative to stay in a temple - the vegetarian meals at our temple were delicious and had many courses. The town has so many temples and good hiking opportunities, we could have stayed longer - but my husband was too much of a foreigner to stay in the temple for two nights. The wonderful Okunoin Cemetery and shrine with an ancient forest was a special treat - we spent an entire morning there, and it was a nice surprise that the buddhist monks take their stewardship of the natural environment so seriously that there is even a forestry department of the temple. Other temples were equally awe-inspiring.
If you’re like me and dream of visiting Koyasan but have to travel on a budget, this is the place for you! The owner is so kind and generous with his advice about enjoying your time exploring this incredible, historic temple town and he even makes great food, too! I highly recommend staying there. It’s also awesome how close it is to the Okunoin Cemetery, which was my favorite part of Koyasan, and also makes attending the morning prayer service much easier because of its close proximity!
The food is exceptional. My kids were a little wary at the emphasis of "vegetarian meals" These were just plain amazing. The room was enormous - much larger than we could have needed and we spent little time there save for sleeping. The onsen was in-hotel and quite nice. The place is as-described everywhere, a Buddhist temple that you get to stay at respectfully. The room and beds were comfortable and warm - and there was snow outside the hotel.
can't get more authentic than this temple stay, so you shouldn't expect too many modern conveniences. Most appreciated thought was the space heater in the tatami bed room (temperatures outside hit 0c)! The included dinner and breakfast consisted of an interesting array of vegetarian dishes, some sourced locally (ie. mushrooms). The location is right off the main road in Koyasan, and steps away from the entrance to the Okunoin cemetery.
The temple was very nice and in a great location right near the graveyard which is a top tourist attraction in Koyasan. The meditation class was excellent and well explained in English. The morning rituals were also very interesting and great to partake in. The meals were ok. Nothing exceptional, a little disappointing given the price. But overall we had a nice stay.
The temple is in a great location in the middle of Koyasan. Check in was easy and staff were nice. Our rooms looked out onto the lovely garden. Room was comfortable and clean. Lodgings were close to Kongōbu-ji and a 15 minute walk to Okunoin Cemetery. We enjoyed the prayer ceremony in the morning.
A cozy traditional Japenese guest-house, right near the Daimon gate. The room was spacious and comfortable, and the facilities were super comfortable. The relatively low price (in comparison to the temple-stays) allowed me to enjoy Koyasan without having to pay a huge amount on accomodation.
Great experience staying in a Buddhist monastery. Excellent (vegetarian) dinner and breakfast. It is expensive ... but a unique experience. The small town of Koyasan is a very interesting locality ... close to nature ... and a wonderful, peaceful atmosphere about this town.
It was a very special stay at Saizen-in. Location was amazing, located near some of the main temples of Koyasan. We participated in the afternoon meditation and morning prayers, which was an experience of its own. Food was exquisite, all vegetarian and very tastful.
What an amazing experience! If you remember that you are staying in a temple and not a hotel you will truly enjoy the experience so much more. It’s like stepping back in time, the food is unique the rooms and bath house authentic and the staff very friendly!
Beautiful space, lovely staff supporting the temple and shukubo. Very clean. Great location in Koyasan. Beautiful vegan meal at breakfast and dinner, tea and snacks provided in your room. Such a unique experience. As they note, it’s not a hotel.
Located in a quiet neighborhood in Koyasan, ,it's a valued alternative to the other ryokans in town. The beds were very comfortable and the room spacious. The restaurant next door was excellent and catered to my friend's gluten allergies.
Tommy told us three daily activities that only locals know about when we arrived so we can witness Koyasan religious culture deeply. Tommy and his wife are not only doing a good job but enjoy it, this makes our stay very joyful.
Our stay at the temple was fantastic! Everyone was so nice, we had a comfortable stay and very much enjoyed the temple itself and the rest of Koyasan. The morning ceremony was also great, we can really recommend everything :)
The guest house was beautiful, very clean and it felt very authentic. Nori was also very kind and he gave me several great spots to visit in Koyasan as well as in Japan in general. I can highly recommend this stay!
Onsen facilities and an amazing experience - the temple encouraged tourists to join in the morning Buddhist rituals. Easier to get to Koyasan than you expect via local trains, buses & cable car.
