Loved the peace and quiet after spending time in busy Tokyo. The morning markets and the Old Town were relaxing to stroll through and the locals were very helpful. We would definitely stay here again. Such a beautiful historical town.

Because i didn't know how good this Ryokan is i just planed the stay for one night. Probably it could be extended for at least one more night or two. Since we stayed there only one night we didn't plan to go much around.

It has been on my wish list, and we were there at the perfect time: Matsuri and cherry blossoms!!
I liked that it was not a big city. Hikes in the mountains/hills would have been nice, and the Hida Village was a special feature.

Takayama was my favourite destination in Japan - it is beautiful, a little calmer than some of the other tourist attraction cities and there was lots to see and do. I wish I had stayed longer. The espresso from the riverside market was the best coffee I had in Japan!

We highly recommend a visit.
We highly recommend a visit. The city is beautiful and provides a respite from the larger cities. The sound of the river seems to permeate the city. The flowering of cherry trees is magnificent during theSpring Festival. Some beautiful shrines and Edo period buildings, including a museum that provides an opportunity to walk through the living quarters and government administrative buildings and identifies the day to day functioning of a local government officials.
There is a wonderful, ‘tiny’ bar near the Retro Museum that is a place to hang out and meet other travelers and converse with the owner. His creative cocktails are really delicious. Loved the outside and upstairs seating as well.
This city knows how to welcome its guests with benches and a customer friendly attitude. Wonderful experience.

Takayama is a beautiful town.
Takayama is a beautiful town. It has a well preserved old district with historic buildings. We visited during spring and took a day trip to the ropeway. It would look amazing during winter. The people were super friendly & enjoyed tourists company.
It is an interesting experience, in between a traditional ryokan and a modern tower hotel. Would definitely recommend if you want something more special than 'just a hotel' or something simpler than a full blown traditional ryokan.
The public baths are amazing! The view from the outdoor bath at the top of the tower, over the city, is amazing.
The breakfast was great, you could easily choose to have a Japanese style breakfast or a Western style breakfast (or why not some combination of the two.)
Traditional Japanese Ryokan with nicely decorated rooms. This was my first Ryokan experience and I have never felt as well cared for as during my stay there. Futon was very comfortable, too (I have never slept on one before). Staff is very attentive and helpful. Great inhouse onsens. Yukata were available for free for guests. Many ammendities were available for free and I loved their shampoo. Takayama old city center is just a 15 min walk away. Takayama station is just 6 min away by foot.
One of the best hotel design and concept i have seen so far. Beautiful large room, spotless clean with many modern touches, but also incorporating elements of a traditional japanese room which tipycally uses wood as a construction material. The hotel is located right in the middle of the former merchants quarter, surrounded by the most beautiful streets of Takayama. The train station is just 15 min away by foot. I wish i would have stayed more.
Hotel Location: Just near Takayama Station
Hotel: New establishment (2018), very cozy and modern atmosphere. Not too pompous (like most Japanese outdated Hotel)
Room: Very comfortable, clean, spacious and quiet room (with Bath and Toilet separated !!)
Facilities: Smart concept regarding their Onsen (4 private baths available) and all other services are well designed
Service: Reception Staff always happy to help and make your stay enjoyable
The ryokan is nice but could be renewed a bit.
Room was clean and nice traditional Japanese interior, was also pretty specious.
Onsen was very small and had just 1 pool (and 2 outside barrels)
Location is very central. walking distance from the train/bus station and also walking distance to the historic city/center/market
Great location!!!! Just 1-2 minutes walk to the station & 10 mins walk to the old town, the morning market!
The rooms are big enough for 2 people & clean.
The reception staff are very helpful & friendly, especially the young guy with the glasses helped me a lot.
If I come to Takayama again, I would stay at this hotel.
Clean n spacious room. In room onsen. Tatami floor bed comfortable, maybe pillow a bit hard. Strictly 3 pm check in n easy checking in. Family run ryokan n boss n staff very friendly. Delicious breakfast Kaiseki style. Order their dinner too n it was superb. Better book the dinner at hotel as there is not much around.
We had a fantastic stay at Ryokan Murayama. The place is operated by what could possibly be the most hardworking and friendly man in Takayama. Order the traditional japanese dinner if possible. We weren't expecting much but it was so tasty and visually appealing. Rooms are spacious and clean, just a bit dated.
The service was outstanding, that staff were welcoming and went out of their way to make our stay pleasant. Dinner was very good, lots of gorgeous Hida beef, and a good introduction to a multicourse Japanese meal for our teenagers. The ryokan is well located for the morning markets and old town Takayama.
We loved Wanosato. It is well worth planning your trip to stay at this cozy traditional ryokan with onsen outside of Takayama. The food was delicious. The spa was exceptional. We stayed in a villa that had huge windows looking onto the river. Extremely romantic! My favorite part of our trip to Japan.
The hotel has everything you need for a confortable and ncie stay in Takayama. It is very close to the JR station (like 5min walk) and the city centre. The room was a bit bigger that the "japanease standard". The onsen was also really nice. The cost/quality ratio is very very high!
I've been stayed at Sumiyoshi several times since 2010 and it's always an outstanding experience. An authentic, charming ryokan with hospitable and gracious hosts, food so wonderful it's hard to even describe, and unbeatable location. There's no better way to experience Japan.
It’s a beautiful little Ryokan in the stunning Takayama valley area. Nearby there’s nature walks, hikes, onsen and a lovely river. The staff all spoke English well and provided amazing vegan options for us upon advanced request. Will definitely be back here soon.
Super great experience here! It’s my first time staying at a traditional Japanese hotel, and it was amazing, highly recommended! Really Nice service (there’s even Chinese staff) and perfect Onsen, I’d like be here next time I go to Takayama!
The hotel location was very, very close to Takayama train station. Just 3 minutes walking distance. McD beside the hotel. Minimarket also around the corner. Many restaurants if you cross the train station.
Right next to Takayama Bus/ Train Terminal. Room and onsen look even better in real than online photos. Room was big compare to most hotels in Japan. Staffs were super nice and speak perfect english.
Very unique ryokan style hotel set in a wonderful location. The staff was absolutely wonderful!! We enjoyed the one chance we had in Japan to book the private onsen on the top floor.
it’s beautifully designed, beds very comfortable, breakfast is the most versatile and rich we encountered so far in Japan hotels ( been to Kyoto, Kanazawa before Takayama)
The ryokan was beautiful, well equipped and comfortable.
The hotel has a wonderful onsen, a great traditional breakfast and lounge room.
Staff was amazing.
