Kusatsu
Kusatsu Onsen Eidaya is located in Kusatsu. The property is a 10-minute walk from Kusatsu Yubatake and Kusatsu-Onsen Bus Terminal. Guests can find a private hot spring bath and Japanese restaurant on site.
At the ryokan, all rooms include a flat-screen TV, fridge and wardrobe. Certain rooms feature in-room hot spring bath, while some rooms offer a kitchen with a microwave.
It is a Japanese style inn with retro vibes. Their private onsen's water comes from the very hot spring source of Kusatsu and therefore you can experience the hot spring water without going to the public baths if you are shy. We mostly used them at night when the town's baths are closed since the inn's are 24/7 open.
I would recommend to book a japanese style room as it has it's tatami and according decoration and together with the inn's yukata (there is an opt for a colorful one and geta to rent) it gives a more japanese experience. We liked that the inn had slippers for going outside which was convenient as the whole town is full with onsens (even ones that are only for feet) and therefore is more convenient to move in slippers.
They have a game area with a lot of retro game (even arcade games) and Nintendo SFC System Video Game Console in the rooms. It may not be in the centre of the town (around 10 min walk for either yubatake or Sainokawara Park and open onsen) but is very close to it and also they offer pick up/drop off from the bus terminal.
Staff were very friendly and helped with everything we needed. In our next visit to Kusatsu we are definitely staying there!

This 3-star ryokan offers luggage storage space and a housekeeping service. Jigokudani Monkey Park is 46 km away and Mt. Kusatsu Shirane is 14 km from the ryokan. Everything was good. The Staff, Location, the room, the onsen, breakfast...all are wonderful. I have problem with my heavy luggage but the nice young female staff helped me. The hotel is right across Kusatsu bus terminal (less then 1 minute walk), and there is a 2-minutes-walk shortcut to Yubatake. There is a convenience store right in front and a restaurant next door. There is no shower or bathtub in the toilet in guest-room. But who needs those when you have an onsen with showering area.

Minakami
Located along Houshi River, Houshi Onsen Chojukan features a public hot spring bath, Japanese-style accommodations with free Wi-Fi and Japanese cuisine. A wooden building stemming from 100 years ago, the property breathes a historical atmosphere. This place is just on the top of my ranking. A real Japanese experience with all the necessary detail to make the stay unforgettable. The different baths super clean and with history. The meals offered were delightful. And the environment just as needed, calm, serene and peaceful.
Ikaho Onsen, Shibukawa
The air-conditioned rooms have tatami (woven-straw) floors and Japanese futon bedding. A flat-screen TV, a fridge and an electric kettle with green tea bags are included in each. The en suite bathroom comes with a hairdryer. Service and servers were the best I have had at any hotel yet, the private bath and deck was incredible. I cannot fault this Ryokan, although it was expensive I would say it was worth it to do once or a few times. I wish I had more time so I could stay another night.

This ryokan was our last leg of travelling around Japan before staying just in Tokyo before leaving so it was to be a special day at the onsen town. And it certainly delivers - the room was amazing, the meals were amazing and the onsen rooms were amazing and open 24h a day. The staff is very friendly and the games room is perfect for after a bath, also having a foot massage device that went really well after a bath. Kusatsu is also a lovely town and we did a bit of exploring and snacking as soon as we arrived in town.
An incredible experience up in the mountains! We stayed for one night, which for us was the perfect amount to experience the onsen and traditional rooms. The hotel make travel to the remote area easy for people coming by train, and arranging a spot on their free mini bus was easy beforehand. The food was lovely, and the staff were all incredibly kind, explaining how the outside onsen work. My partner is also over 6ft, and there were yukata and slippers that worked for him - he just had to remember to duck :)!
The onsen was amazing! Different temperatures to move between and one very warm spot, nice! Beautiful surrounding, like an anime fairytale! Pretty yukatas! Nice room with good view and warm tatami floor! The futon was warm and the blanket super fluffy!! The gift shop clerk was so nice and helpful, helped me to buy the right size yukata and color! Simple explanation from station to shuttlebus by photos and also good detailed explanation of facility at check-in.
Japanese style Ryokan within 5 to 10 minutes walk of the bus station and short walk to town centre Option of several on-site onsen for private use Friendly staff Nice Japanese breakfast Reasonable price
It was a beautiful stay and our first experience at a ryokan. We were made to feel very special from the moment we arrived, until the time we checked out. The meals were lovely. Lots of interesting things to try for both dinner and breakfast and dressed in the provided yukatas. We loooooved our private onsen in our room and also tried two of the three private onsens on site which can be used by any guest pending availability. Beautiful views! The town is also lovely but be prepared for the sulfur smell from the hot springs!
Western style room was great! The tatami room had ample room for several futons, in addition to a couple beds outside the tatami room. Open concept with sliding doors was great for our group (6 people) so we can chat and hangout freely, and slide the doors shut at night for privacy. Breakfast was good. The outdoor onsen was really nice.
Kusatsu is a beautiful town, built around a hot spring. The hotel (ryokan) was located 2 blocks from the central area - well within easy walking distance. It was a perfect town and hotel for a 24-hour visit. Lots of stores and artisanal food in town. At the hotel, we enjoyed the public onsen as well as an hour in a private room. The kaiseki (multi-course) dinner was excellent as was the breakfast.
Rooftop onsen was gorgeous. If you're reserving make sure to get it while there is still light to view the mountains. If not you can use the gendered sides anytime during their open hours. Staff was exceptional. Spacious rooms with tatami floors. The full ryokan experience in a classic onsen town. 10/10
Room was large, enjoyed the provided yukata and the Ryokan exclusive onsens.
The location was lovely, the grounds were beautiful, and the staff was bilingual and very friendly, and the private onsen was extremely nice. The futons were quite comfortable and I loved having baskets and yukatas available to take around town.
