Alexander Nevsky Cathedral

Sometimes it takes a while for love to bloom. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is a case in point. This ornate Russian Revival cathedral was built at the end of the 19th century, while Estonia was part of the Russian Empire. Considered by many to be an emblem of imperial oppression, it was scheduled for demolition in 1924. However, that never came to pass and here it stands a century later, as one of Tallinn’s most iconic landmarks.

Go in the late afternoon (4:30 or so) when the market is closing and the fish vendors are throwing their leftovers away. Herons come (we saw six or seven) and eat the scraps. It's fun. The market in general is interesting and has lots of traditional Dutch food.

I love a street market, but for me, there weren't a lot of interesting stalls. Mostly fabrics, cheap clothing, food, other touristy knicknacks. I did, however, love De Peperbol -- a kitchenwares store where I picked up (too) many cute tea towels.

Great to see a variety of items (snacks, cheese, clothing, souvenirs, flowers, seafood and fruits). It's a long stretch of road with stalls along the street and some shops and restaurants in the surrounding area. Be mindful of buying cheese though. I began to doubt of the cheeses' origin when I was already in my country. I found a sticker label at the bottom of one of the cheese that included a brand name that didn't sound Dutch. I searched it online and it looked like it was a Chinese brand. I'm sure there are authentic ones but just don't buy on impulse! If possible, do not buy cheese that are already packed together so you can investigate the labels properly. The ones I bought were 3 pieces of cheese that were packed together to look more presentable for gift-giving (and possibly hide it's true origins by hiding the labels).
